The City of Gresham is accepting applications for the position of Firefighter/EMT Basic and Firefighter/Paramedic. Working as a Firefighter for the City of Gresham presents an exciting opportunity to serve the public of the fourth largest city in the State of Oregon, along with the cities of Troutdale, Fairview, Wood Village and unincorporated areas of Multnomah County. As a Firefighter, you will respond to emergency calls related to fire suppression and emergency medical services.

An eligibility list will be created in anticipation of a Spring 2022 hiring and recruit academy. Future vacancies may be filled from the same list.

Salary Information: $56,340-$96,432/ Annually

Department Overview: Gresham Fire is a fast-paced fire and EMS department that covers 60+ square miles and over 150,000 people. We provide Advanced Life Support EMS first response, Technical Rescue, Regional Hazardous Materials Team, Rescue Swimmers and Rescue Divers, Boat and swift water rescue, CBRNE, Wildland Urban Interface, Confined Space Entry and Rescue, USAR, Tactical Support Medics (SWAT). We answer over 16,000 calls from seven stations. Our staff works on a 24/48 ABC schedule.

City Information: The City of Gresham was founded in 1905. We are a full-service city that shares a border with Portland, Oregon which puts us in the largest population center in Oregon. We are 2 hours from the Pacific Ocean, 2 hours from the high desert, and 1 hour from Mt. Hood and year-round snow skiing. We are situated on the Columbia River. Additionally, we have an extensive mass transportation system including buses and light rail trains.

Job Requirements

Age:
18 years of age by date of hire

High School Grad / GED:
High School diploma or G.E.D

Driver's License:
Must have valid state driver's license at time of hire

Ability to Read/Speak English:
Must be able to read and speak the English Language

College:
Some course work preferred by not required

Academy Certification:
Possess an Oregon EMT Basic, Intermediate, or Paramedic certification prior to job offer. Preference may be given to candidates with Paramedic certification. Possess a valid CPAT and submit to the City of Gresham on or before October 15, 2021.

Prior Experience:
No, however, preference may be given to candidates with prior paid career fire department work experience.

Specific Disqualifiers/Behaviors:

Felony, Criminal Activity, and Drug Use Disqualifiers:

Felonies: Any applicant arrested and/or convicted as an adult in court or makes admissions during the employment phase of a felony or attempted felony, conspiracy or solicitation of a felony, including but not limited to: treason, murder, voluntary manslaughter, rape, robbery, arson, burglary, kidnapping, and/or any other felony that involves physical force, the threat of physical force or crimes of dishonesty may be disqualified.
Misdemeanors: Any applicant arrested and/or convicted as an adult of a misdemeanor offense in court or makes admissions during the employment phase within seven (7) years of the date of application may be disqualified or any applicant convicted as an adult of two (2) or more misdemeanors within the last (7) years will be disqualified.
Drugs (excluding marijuana): Any applicant that has made use of a prohibited substance or abuse of a controlled substance may be grounds for disqualification. Any applicant arrested and/or convicted or makes admissions during the employment phase as an adult for possession and/or sale of narcotics, dangerous drugs, or hallucinogens or any other controlled substance or drug abuse that relates to job performance or an attempt, conspiracy or solicitation to commit such a criminal act will be disqualified. Any applicant admitting to using drugs of any type during academy training or the selection process will be disqualified. This includes use of Recreational Marijuana that may otherwise be legal in Oregon or other states and countries.
Marijuana: Any applicant arrested and/or convicted as an adult in court or makes admissions during the employment phase for the possession of illegal marijuana may be disqualified. Any applicant convicted or makes admissions during the employment phase as an adult for the sale of marijuana, or an attempt, conspiracy, or solicitation to commit such a criminal act will be disqualified.
Sex Offenses and Acts of Violence: Any applicant arrested and/or convicted in court or makes admissions during the employment phase of a sex offense or an offense of causing or threatening to cause bodily harm, or an attempt, conspiracy or solicitation to commit such a criminal act may be disqualified.
Guns, Concealed Weapons, and Dangerous Ordnance: Any applicant arrested and/or convicted as an adult in court or makes admissions during the employment phase for violating or attempting to violate any gun control ordinance, carrying an unpermitted concealed weapon, or possession of any dangerous ordnance may be disqualified.
Any applicant who has paid or accepted a bribe or favor to cover or hide any criminal offense, acted in any manner to prevent discovery and/or apprehension of any criminal act by any duly constituted law enforcement agency, or was involved in any plan or attempt to accomplish any of the above may be disqualified.

Driving Disqualifiers:
Traffic Offenses: Any applicant arrested and/or convicted as an adult in court in the last five (5) years for any of the following may be disqualified:

Driving while impaired by drugs or alcohol
Vehicular homicide
Leaving the scene of an accident
Reckless operation of a motor vehicle
Revocation or suspension of driving privileges on two (2) or more occasions
Revocation or suspension during applicant process

Any applicant with six (6) or more points on their current record may be disqualified.

Any applicant without a valid driver’s license will not be eligible for appointment as a sworn employee.

Employment Disqualifiers:

Any applicant discharged within five (5) years of the date of application from previous employment for insubordination, serious misconduct on the job, unexcused absenteeism, or tardiness may be disqualified.
Any applicant suspended, reprimanded, or disciplined by previous employers within the past five (5) years for insubordination, misconduct on the job, unexcused absenteeism, tardiness, inefficiency, or neglect of duty on two (2) or more occasions may be disqualified.
Any applicant released from or having admitted to pilferage or thefts of cash, goods, or services from previous employment will be disqualified.

Additional Disqualifiers:

Any applicant failing to obey or honor any court ordered judgments including, but not limited to: Alimony or support payments or having failed to pay any fine imposed by a court of record may be disqualified.
Any applicant receiving other than an honorable discharge from any of the United States military services may be disqualified.
Any applicant who has made intentional false alarm to a fire or police agency may be disqualified.
Any applicant who is currently a member of any organization that advocates crime or the violent overthrow of the United States government will be disqualified.
Any applicant who admits to a current pattern of alcohol, drug abuse, or illegal gambling within the past two (2) years will be disqualified (i.e., conduct that is predictable, repetitive, or a continuing activity.)
Any applicant who has made false statements or purposely omitted information on the application or during the selection process will be disqualified.
Any applicant who is discovered of committing or participating in any un-discovered criminal offense may be disqualified.

An applicant may be removed from consideration who:

Lacks any of the minimum requirements established for the position for which he is applying.
Practiced or attempted to practice any deliberate deception or fraud in their application or in their examination, in establishing their eligibility or securing their appointment.
Uses, threatens or attempts to use political influence in securing employment or re-employment.
Fails to submit their application correctly or within the prescribed time limit.
Has been dismissed from public service or other employment affecting the ability of the applicant to perform the position for which he has applied.
Does not possess or cannot obtain prior to employment necessary license, certification, bonding, or other requirements of the job classification.
Fails pre-employment drug and alcohol testing.
Any applicant, recruit or employee, who knowingly fails to disclose information related to the Gresham Fire & Emergency Services Applicant Disqualifying Criteria is subject to disqualification from the process, probation release, and/or termination of employment.
