Necessary Certifications:State of Ohio Department of Public Safety certification as a Paramedic and Firefighter Level I and II. (Not required at time of examination, but must have prior to appointment)
Passing of a physical agility test (4 minutes, 30 seconds) from Cuyahoga Community College or Stark State College is required prior to appointment (Not required at time of examination, but must have prior to appointment).
Additional Requirements:All applicants are required to submit to a thorough background check, polygraph examination, psychological and medical examination, drug screen, physical agility test (administered by the City of Middleburg Heights or a third-party), and any other additional methods necessary to ascertain the qualifications and abilities of the applicant.

Job SummaryUnder the general direction of the Shift Captain and/or Lieutenant this position is responsible for providing services related to fire suppression, medical emergencies, hazardous materials and other natural and/or manmade emergencies, fire prevention, fire inspections, public education, search and rescue, fire scene investigations, care and maintenance of departmental equipment, grounds and facilities and code compliance and enforcement.
Department Overview:
Our fire division consists of a Chief, Assistant Chief, three Captains, four Lieutenants (one being the Fire Prevention Lieutenant) and 18 Full-time Firefighter/Paramedics.
Our fire department protects 8.2 square miles in our community in Northeast Ohio, which includes residential and wooded areas, clean industry, and warehouse, office, and retail properties. We also have a railroad, an interstate highway (I-71) and various bodies of water, including streams, ponds, small lakes, a quarry, and a portion of the Rocky River, which are all part of our responsibility.
In addition to being responsible for fire suppression and prevention, we handle a large number of medical emergencies that require paramedic training and advanced lifesaving skills. All of our firefighters are certified paramedics, required to maintain their certification with regular hands-on training with equipment, through classroom work and in hospital clinical rotations.
Our department also helps provide specialized services including a fire investigation team, dive/rescue, swift-water and ice rescue, hazardous materials response, confined-space/trench rescue and serving as medics for police SWAT and bomb teams.
Our fire-prevention services include building inspections to identify and correct hazardous conditions in commercial and industrial buildings, apartment buildings, nursing homes and other public facilities.
Our fire department also provides a variety of non-emergency services including public education for adults and children.
City/County/Area Information:Middleburg Heights is a suburb of Cleveland in Cuyahoga County, Ohio. Middleburg Heights occupies eight square miles and is located thirteen miles southwest of Cleveland, bounded by Brook Park to the north, Parma and Parma Heights to the east, Strongsville and North Royalton to the South, and Berea to the west.
