Department Overview: The Salem Police Department is a full-service professional agency with 190 sworn positions, with a full complement of support staff. Career police officers with the Salem Police Department have the opportunity to work in a wide variety of specialized units or special teams. Police Officers must demonstrate the ability to make proper decisions, exercise sound judgment in assessing human behavior, handle emergency situations, resolve problems without bias, enforce laws, issue citations or warnings to violators, direct traffic, investigate crash and crime scenes, preserve evidence, interview suspects, witnesses, victims, and provide credible court testimony.Job Summary:Do you have a strong desire to serve, protect and impact your community in a positive way? Salem Police Department is currently hiring entry level Police Officers.The city of Salem offers 2%-10% premium pay for a combination of DPSST certification levels, training, and college education. Employees who have been with the City for 10 years will receive a 3% longevity increase after January 1, 2017.There is also 5% bilingual pay incentive for language skills in Spanish, Russian, Vietnamese, Thai, Lowland Lao, Cambodian, Highland Lao (Mien), Hmong, or certification in American Sign Language. Qualified applicants who are bilingual in English/Spanish or American Sign Language are encouraged to apply.Career police officers with the Salem Police Department have the opportunity to work in a wide variety of specialized units or special teams. Extra duty pay is paid for SWAT (3%), HAZMAT (3%), Field Training Officer (5%), K-9 (5%), K-9 decoy (2.5%), and TNT (3%).
