Central Whidbey Island Fire & Rescue currently has 2 vacancies and is establishing a pool of qualified candidates for Part-Time FirefighterQualified candidates will remain in the pool for a period of 24-months.

Classification: Part-Time Firefighter/EMT-BTemporary Part-Time Firefighters work no more than 150.5 hours per month (average of 35 hours). The work schedule for Part-Time Firefighters is a 24-hour shift every 9th day and at least two additional 12-hour day shifts per month. Part-Time Firefighters augment full-time, career staffing providing firefighting, rescue, and emergency medical services including, but not limited to: Fire control and extinguishment, driving and operating firefighting apparatus and emergency vehicles, rescue, medical treatment, training, station, and equipment maintenance duties. In addition, Part-Time Firefighters perform project work related to their primary responsibilities under the direction of a Full-Time Career Firefighter or Fire Officer. Drug Use Disqualifiers: Candidates will be required to complete a four panel urinalysis that screens for cocaine, amphetamine/methamphetamine, PCP, and opiates. A positive test will disqualify potential candidates.
Employment Disqualifiers: A comprehensive background investigation is conducted on applicants to establish evidence of good moral character, a well-adjusted personality, community commitment, fire service adaptability, and a pattern of conduct acceptable to CWIFR. Background investigation and reference checks will include the candidate’s completion of a statement of personal history and work experience. Determination that the candidate does not have the requisite behavioral characteristics will disqualify potential candidates.
Additional Disqualifiers: Successful candidates may be offered a position contingent upon successful completion of a medical physical and psychological examination.
Candidates must be capable of meeting the requirements for medical evaluation of firefighter candidates specified in NFPA 1582 Comprehensive Occupational Medical Program for Fire Departments. Failure to meet these requirements will disqualify candidates from employment with CWIFR.
The psychological assessment consists of a written test and an evaluation with a psychologist. This component of the assessment process examines individual characteristics that may have an impact on the candidate’s likelihood of acceptable performance as a Firefighter. A negative assessment may disqualify candidates from employment with CWIFR.
Hiring Process: Selection Process: Based on an application review and written exam score, candidates may be invited to participate in a Panel Interview. Panel Interviews will be conducted on May 6, 2019. Applicants with a combined score of 70% on the Weighted Application, Written Examination, and Oral Board and who have current NTN CPAT Certification (i.e., passed within the last 12 months) will be selected for the pool of qualified applicants. The pool will be stratified into four groups (quartiles) based on their scores in the initial elements of the selection process. The number of individuals selected to continue in the process from the pool of qualified applicants at any given time will be based on the District’s staffing requirements. The District may select any individual from the qualified pool to continue in the assessment process.
Candidates in the qualified pool who are selected to advance in the hiring process will be invited to participate in a skills assessment. This element of the assessment process evaluates proficiency in a range of firefighting and emergency medical skills:
