Department Overview: Payson Fire Department responds to over 3500 calls per year. As the largest department in the area, we provide structural and wildland firefighting, paramedic level emergency medical services, community education, and sponsor local and statewide firefighter trainings. Reserve firefighters will fill 24- hour shifts upon successful completion of the orientation academy. Career hires are typically pulled from the reserve program.
Area Information: Located 75 miles northeast of the Phoenix metro valley, Payson Fire Department is “cool mountain community” situated just beneath the beautiful Mogollon Rim in northern Gila County and surrounded by a ponderosa pine forest. Payson Fire provides service to the Town of Payson, East Verde Park, Tonto Apache Tribal Reservation, Oxbow-Round Valley communities, along with 42 miles of state highway and mutual aid responses with four nearby fire districts.
Population: We serve a total service population approximately of 20,000 year round. Summer populations can increase to 28,000.
US Citizen: Must be a US Citizen
High School Grad/GED: Minimum of a high school diploma or GED
Valid ARIZONA State Driver's License: Must possess, or be able to obtain by the time of hire, a valid Arizona driver’s license and have an acceptable driving record
Ability to Read/Speak English: Ability to read, write and speak English proficiently
Hiring Process: The Town of Payson Fire Department typically hires career members from the reserve firefighter program. In order to be considered for employment, candidates must submit a completed application to the department that reflects the qualifications for the position. Specific Disqualifiers/Behaviors :
New Hire Academy: In order to ensure that new hire reserve firefighters are successful, the department requires each new reserve to participate in a multi- week orientation academy that covers firefighting, EMS, wildland, and specific department operations. The academy is tentatively scheduled to start in mid-September and continue until mid-November, being held on Saturday of each week. Each training day begins at 0800 and ends at or around 1800 hours with one hour for lunch. All orientation academy time is paid time.
