Department Overview:

Whatcom County Fire District No. 7 is a combination department with 56 career employees and 65 volunteers. The District covers 75 square miles in and around the City of Ferndale, Washington, with six fire stations utilizing 24 pieces of fire and EMS apparatus. The District has career staffing at four of these stations, 24 hours a day, supplemented by the dedicated volunteers who are assigned to all six stations. The District provides fire suppression services, and hazardous materials response, along with Basic Life Support and Advanced Life Support EMS service. In 2024, the District answered 5,941 calls for service. The number of calls for service has been increasing steadily since the early 1990s.

Ferndale is located on the I-5 corridor with easy access to both Seattle and Vancouver. Puget Sound is only minutes away and offers great boating and fishing. The Mt. Baker Ski Area is less than 60 minutes away and offers some of the best skiing in the United States.

Job Requirements

Age: 21

Citizenship Required: Yes

High School Grad/GED: High School Diploma or GED equivalent

Vision: Valid Washington State Driver's License

Ability to Read/Speak English: Yes

Vision: 20/20 vision or corrected

College: None required

Academy Certification: Fire service experience is required, with proof of graduation from an accredited fire academy.

Prior Experience: One year minimum of Paramedic experience, 3 years is preferred.

Necessary Certifications: NREMT-Paramedic and/or Washington State Paramedic; ACLS; PALS and/or PEPP; PHTLS

Hiring Process: Candidates who meet the application requirements will be posted to the eligibility list. If a vacancy occurs, then the District will determine a number based on the percentage of candidates to be invited to participate in oral board testing, skills assessment, and chiefs interview process. The finalist(s) will be required to undergo additional evaluations which include: a final interview, job related medical examination, urine drug screening, reference check, background investigation for criminal convictions, and driving record check. The Chief may require other additional evaluations.
Failure to pass any of the evaluations may result in removal from the eligibility roster. If hired, applicants must be able to provide personal identification and verification of authorization to work in the United States.
