The City of Berea is establishing an eligibility list for a full-time Police Officer. There are currently two job openings and the possibility of additional hires in the next 12 months.
Testing is open from January 2 – January 31, 2025.
Those with existing scores must add the City of Berea to their profile no later than
January 31, 2025.
Completion of the Personal History Questionnaire (PHQ) and submission of a valid operators’ license is required.
2024 Salary Information: $32.09 per hour ($66,747.20) starting base salary. Upon completion of the probationary period, wages increase to $39.79 per hour ($82,763.20). Senior Officer wage after four years is $43.72 per hour ($90,937.60). Salary information is based on the current Collective Bargaining Agreement, a new agreement will be entered into in 2025.

Department Overview: The Berea Police Department offers residents a wide variety of services. With a complement of 33 full-time officers and support staff, emphasis is placed on developing community programs that promote safety and well-being. Modern technology has been integrated into police operations but has not replaced the human element necessary for successful delivery of law enforcement services.
The Department has a Community Engagement Unit and actively participates in a variety of activities with youth and adults.
We have been recognized by the Ohio Attorney General and other organizations for our innovative approach to the opioid crisis, which emphasizes treatment instead of arrest. Our Safe Passages Program has been adopted by numerous other jurisdictions throughout the state.Programs such as motorcycle officers, Ride-a-long program, bicycle patrols, Emergency Response Team, auxiliary police, Youth Diversion Program and other initiatives offer residents the service they should expect from their law enforcement professionals. The Berea Police Department continues to evolve and expand as it meets the needs and concerns of its citizens.
Area Information: The City of Berea is a safe, diverse, progressive community offering unique opportunities. Berea is located approximately 12 miles south of Cleveland, Ohio and 2 miles south of Cleveland's Hopkins International Airport in Cuyahoga County. Established in 1836, the town has a rich history in sandstone quarries, education, and transportation. It is the proud home of Baldwin-Wallace University and headquarters of the Cleveland Browns.

Job Requirements:
Age: 21 at time of hire; no more than age 35 if an original appointment
U.S. Citizenship: Required
High School Grad or GED: Required
Valid Operator’s License: Required (If out-of-state, the candidate will be required to obtain an Ohio license.)
Ability to Read and Speak English: Required
Academy Certification: Not required. However, preference is given to candidates who are state-certified Peace Officers at the time of appointment.
Minimum Score: 70% average
Hiring Process: Candidates must receive an average score of 70% in order to be placed on the eligibility list. The Civil Service Commission will certify the top 10 or top 25% of eligible candidates (whichever is higher) to the Chief of Police. The selection process usually begins with a detailed background check and the completion of a detailed application. Candidates must also successfully pass a physical agility test conducted by Cuyahoga Community College. Evidence must be submitted to the Commission no later than April 4, 2025, of having passed the Tri-C police physical agility test between January 2, 2024 – March 31, 2025.
Finalists may also be interviewed by a citizen panel, the Director of Public Safety and the Mayor.Once a provisional offer of employment is made, the applicant will be required to undergo both physical and mental health examinations, a credit check and a polygraph.
Specific Disqualifiers/ Behaviors: Any felony conviction will disqualify a candidate.Driving Disqualifiers: Alcohol and/or drug driving convictions do not automatically disqualify a candidate. However, it may be a factor when making a hiring decision. The weight that a prior conviction is given will depend on the circumstances and time since the conviction. Must be able to maintain insurability under those standards set by the City’s liability insurance provider.Drug Use Disqualifiers: Prior drug use does not automatically disqualify a candidate, but will be a factor in a hiring decision. The weight it is given will depend on the circumstances. Current drug use will disqualify a candidate.
Military Credit: Any applicant for an original appointment who has attained a passing grade on the written entrance examination, and who has completed one year or more of active duty in the service of the Armed Forces of the United States of America and has been honorably discharged therefrom, shall be given a credit of two percent (2%) of the basic score attained on such entrance examination, the credit to be added to the basic score in order to obtain the final grade upon such entrance examinationIn order to receive military credit, candidates are required to upload their Form DD-214 through their NTN account. Only those that show a minimum of one (1) year Net Active Service on the form will receive the credit.
