The Champaign County Sheriff's Office is building an ongoing eligibility list for Deputy Sheriff - Patrol.
The department requires the candidate PHQ and the Public Safety Self Assessment (PSSA). You can access both the PHQ and the PSSA through your candidate account. NTN suggests completing these components as soon as possible, or you may not be considered further in the process.
Salary Information: Starting salary in 2025 for a patrol deputy is approximately $67,267 in the first year, $71,718 after a year of service, and $79,248 by five years of service. Deputies get paid extra for working holidays and have opportunities for overtime pay.

Department Overview: The Champaign County Sheriff's Office has three separate uniformed and sworn divisions each of which have different primary job duties.
The Law Enforcement Division consists of 56 persons (which includes the Sheriff and Chief Deputy who both have responsibilities other than Law Enforcement such as the jail and Courthouse). Deputies patrol and answer emergency and nonemergency calls for service throughout the County, which is about 1,050 square miles (the 5th largest county in the State by land and 10th largest by population).
Area Information: Champaign County, Illinois is located in the heart of East Central Illinois. US Interstates 57, 72 & 74 intersect in the County which puts Champaign County approximately 2 hours south of Chicago Illinois; 3 hours north-northeast of St. Louis, Missouri; and 2 hours west of Indianapolis, Indiana.
Home to the University of Illinois, Parkland College, and two major regional hospitals (Carle Foundation Hospital and OSF Heart of Mary Medical Center), Champaign County is a leader in education, health care, government, high technology, light industry and agriculture. Champaign County comprises 1008 square miles, the majority of which are involved in agriculture.
Population: We are the primary police agency for approximately 56,000 people. We often times assist other law enforcement agencies in the County, too. Champaign County has a diverse population of approximately 210,000 residents.
Age:Be at least 21 years of age at the time of appointment as a Deputy Sheriff.Citizenship Required:Yes, required by IL law.High School Grad / GED:High school diploma or general education degree (GED); or equivalent combination of education and experience.Driver's License:Valid Driver's License required.Ability to Read/Speak English:Ability to read and interpret documents such as police regulations, operating instructions, legal documents and procedure manuals. Ability to write reports and correspondence. Ability to speak effectively before the public or employees of the organization.Vision:The candidate must test his/her vision at 20/40 or better (Corrected). The DOT guidelines for vision testing are applicable.College:Preferred, not required.Academy Certification:The applicant must successfully complete the basic law enforcement training academy for Police Officers/Deputy Sheriffs or a recognized equivalent, or; already have completed and be currently certified by the State of Illinois, or; be able to obtain certification without having to attend the basic academy.NOTE: Applicant must successfully pass the Illinois Power Test (Physical Agility Testing) to be admitted to a Basic Law Enforcement Academy, without exception.Prior Experience:Preferred, not required.
