The Marshfield Fire and Rescue Department is accpeting applications to fill a vacant Firefighter/Paramedic position. Applications due 07/26/2024.

This position requires a Fire Team and a valid CPAT through the National Testing Network. The CPAT may be taken at any licensed agency if there is not a National Testing Network location offering CPATs in your area. Please upload documentation confirming your CPAT in your candidate account.

The purpose of this position is to respond to emergencies and perform fire suppression activities, rescue work, hazardous materials response, and basic or advanced life-support emergency medical service.

Salary Information: $64,938 (1/1/2023 rate); 3% increase for Paramedic, and additional 1% for Critical Care Paramedic

Department Overview: The Marshfield Fire and Rescue Department (MFRD) is a full-time career department consisting of 36 sworn individuals and one non-sworn employee. We are a full-service department offering services in fire suppression, EMS, technical rescue, specialized rescue, vehicle extrication, code enforcement, fire prevention and public fire education, among others. We provide EMS and fire protection to the City of Marshfield and provide Critical Care Paramedic level EMS to 13 surrounding townships and villages in Wood, Clark, and Marathon Counties. The Department also performs interfacility transfers for the Marshfield Clinic Health System and Paramedic Intercepts for area ambulance services. An essential part of a Firefighter/Paramedic’s work involves performing basic and advanced life support procedures and transporting patients. Approximately 90% of the department’s emergency responses are EMS related. Service is provided from one fire station which opened in 2010.

The primary function of a Marshfield Fire Fighter/Paramedic is to protect the community from disaster situations, including structure fires, and promote an environment of public safety within the City of Marshfield. This position involves emergency medical services (EMS), fire prevention and inspection activities, equipment and station maintenance, public education, and training.

ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS

Duties include, but are not limited to:

Respond to fire calls and perform fire suppression, rescue, exposure protection, ventilation, salvage, and overhaul operations.
Respond to emergency medical calls and provide service within the constraints of the department's protocols. Service includes basic and advanced life support.
Maintains a state of readiness of facilities, vehicles, apparatus, and equipment by inspections, cleaning, testing, and maintenance.
Participate in drills and attend training exercises in firefighting, fire equipment,
hazardous materials, rescue, and emergency medical skills; successfully complete training programs in all phases of duties and responsibilities.
Interact with the public performing essential non-emergency duties such as fire prevention inspections, public fire education, and injury prevention education.
Perform routine maintenance and janitorial duties on buildings and grounds of the fire department.
Perform related work as required.

The fire department covers approximately 316 square miles for ambulance responses. The City is governed by a Full-Time City Administrator, part-time Mayor, and ten Alderpersons. The Marshfield Fire and Rescue Department is governed by a five member Fire and Police Commission.

College:

Associate degree in Fire Protection, Fire Science, Paramedicine, or related field
Minimum of 60 college-level credits in a related field.
Obtain, as a condition of continued employment, an Associate degree in Fire Protection, Fire Science, Paramedicine, or related field within five years of employment with the City of Marshfield (at the expense of the candidate)

Desirable Experience Includes:
Candidates who submit a complete packet through NTN including the City of Marshfield application, cover letter, resume, copies of all pertinent certifications and licensures, and meet the minimum qualifications (including a valid CPAT) for this position may be invited to participate in a Computerized Test (date/location to be determined based on hiring needs). Following the test, results will be reviewed and candidates will be contacted by e-mail, if selected for a panel interview.

Necessary Certifications:

Valid CPAT at time of application; Fire Team Written Exam with a minimum score of 70% in all sections; Firefighter I and Firefighter II (State of Wisconsin or IFSAC Accredited); NIMS 100, 200, and 700; Nationally Registered and/or State of Wisconsin licensed Paramedic at time of hire.

Additional Requirements:

Interact with the public performing essential non-emergency duties such as fire prevention inspections, public fire education, and injury prevention education.
Respond to non-emergency calls for assistance and safely perform assigned functions required.
Perform routine maintenance and janitorial duties on buildings and grounds of the fire department.
Perform related work as required.

Specific Disqualifiers/Behaviors:

Driving Disqualifiers: Must have a valid Wisconsin driver’s license and good driving record.

Employment Disqualifiers: Must pass a pre-employment medical evaluation including drug screening, psychological examination, reference checks, and background investigation. A comprehensive background investigation is conducted on applicants to establish evidence of good moral character, a well-adjusted personality, community commitment, fire service adaptability, and a pattern of conduct acceptable to MFRD. Determination that the candidate does not have the requisite behavioral characteristics may disqualify potential candidates.

Additional Disqualifiers: Successful candidates may be offered a position contingent upon successful completion of a medical physical and psychological examination. Candidates must be capable of meeting the requirements for medical evaluation of firefighter candidates specified in NFPA 1582 Comprehensive Occupational Medical Program for Fire Departments. Failure to meet these requirements may disqualify candidates from employment with MFRD. The psychological assessment consists of a written test and an evaluation with a psychologist. This component of the assessment process examines individual characteristics that may have an impact on the candidate’s likelihood of acceptable performance as a Firefighter. A negative assessment may disqualify candidates from employment with MFRD.

Work Schedule and Residency Requirements:

The department works a California schedule averaging a 56-hour work week. The 24-hour shift schedule is as follows: 24 On, 24 Off; 24 On, 24 Off; 24 On, 96 Off. MFRD firefighters work 10 days per month with four consecutive days off occurring 3-4 times per month. The schedule then repeats. There is ample opportunity for overtime as a Firefighter/Paramedic with the MFRD.

Marshfield Fire Department requires employees to live within 15 miles of the jurisdictional boundaries of the local governmental unit and must establish residence within the specified area within 60 days after completion of the probationary period.
