Department Overview: The Florence Police Department is a team of dedicated professionals and volunteers from the community we serve whose commitment to excellence is reflected in everything we do.

The Florence Police Department has the responsibility to provide the public safety protection services, including the operation of a city jail, to serve the community whose population can swell up to 15,000-20,000 people during the summer season.

The Florence Police Department has 24 positions authorized that consist of a Police Chief, Police Commander, three Sergeants, an Executive Assistant, 1 Detective, 9 Police Officers, 1 Corrections Officer and 7 Communications Officers. We currently have 1.46 sworn police officers per 1000 population.

The Florence Police Department provides supplemental policing services to the Confederated Tribes Three Rivers Casino and Hatch Tract. Additionally, the Florence Police Department also maintains the Florence Municipal Jail and provides police services as needed for the Florence Municipal Court. The Police Department is also home to the West Lane Public Safety Answering Point 911 Dispatch Center, responsible for dispatching Police, Fire, and Ambulance throughout an approximate 540 square mile area.

Area Information: Florence is located on the central Oregon coast, about an hour west of Eugene. We’d best be described as rural, but not remote. With several restaurants, grocery stores, major hospitals, casinos, and several indoor and outdoor activities, Florence is a year-round destination.

Job Requirements

Age:
21

Citizenship Required:
Possess or be able to obtain US citizenship per OAR.

High School Grad / GED:
Possess High School Diploma or General Education Degree (GED)

Driver's License:
Possess or obtain a valid Oregon driver's license by hire date with an acceptable driving record.

Ability to Read/Speak English:
Read, write, and speak the English language with high school level proficiency.

Vision:
Require vision consistent with Police Standards set by the State of Oregon.

College:
Any higher-level education degree with an emphasis in criminal justice or related field is desirable, but not required.

Academy Certification:
Posses or obtain a Department of Public Safety and Standards Training (DPSST) Basic Police Officer Certification within 12 months of appointment.

Prior Experience:
Desirable, but not required.

No felony convictions
No recent DUI's, Reckless Driving, Hit and Run
No recent illicit drug usage

Hiring Process:

Must complete online application: HERE
Applicants must take the NTN or POST exam and deliver scores to the Department by the date determined by the Department. Reading section score must be 75% or greater; Must not fail any one section; must score at least 75% overall.
The Department notifies top applicants to attend an Oral Board interview with the Department.
The Department notifies top applicants from the Oral Board interview to attend a Police Chief’s interview.
The top applicant receives a conditional offer and must complete a comprehensive background investigation. Other qualifying applicants may be requested to complete the comprehensive background and enter the eligibility pool.
After passing the comprehensive background investigation, the top applicant will be scheduled for a psychological exam, medical physical, and drug screening.
After successfully passing all above related exams, the top applicant will receive a finalized offer and start date.
