Department Overview: The Salina Department is a progressive municipal agency thatproudly provides full-spectrum emergency services to the citizens and visitors of Salina. We are a Fire-based EMS department that services the City of Salina and Saline County. We're proud to say that our department has an ISO Class 2 rating and is a CFAI Accredited department. We operate on a 24/48 work schedule and are an all hazards department that provides regional response in Technical Rescue and Hazardous Material incidents. Our staff consists of 90 sworn and 2 civilian positions. All members are educated and highly trained in multiple emergency disciplines. The SFD continuously strives to improve services to its community through professionalism and efficiency. The SFD serves the City of Salina, Saline County, and North Central Region of Kansas for specialty incidents. The SFD utilizes 4 Stations strategically placed throughout the city to provide fire suppression, emergency medical services, advanced technical rescue, hazardous materials response, fire inspection, fire investigation, plans review, and public education to the community it serves. The agency protects an estimated $550 million in property.
City Information: Salina, Kansas is located in north central Kansas, near the geographic center of the contiguous United States. It is the tenth-largest city in Kansas, with a population of just over 48,000. Situated at the intersection of Interstate Highways 70 and 135, Salina is centered in one of the largest wheat producing areas of the world. Kansas City, Missouri and Wichita, Kansas are 180 and 96 miles away, respectively, via the direct access of these two highways. Denver is 425 miles to the west. The city serves as a regional trade center for north central Kansas. Many individuals and businesses within a 70-mile radius travel to the city to purchase consumer goods and services. This designation as a regional trade center is supported by the fact that Saline County has the third-highest retail trade pull factor of all Kansas counties, according to the Kansas State University Extension Economic Department. Salina also has a large and diversified manufacturing base, with industry leaders in lighting, automotive batteries, aircraft, and foods.
Population: City of Salina is 48,000 with total Saline County approximately 55,700.
