Department Overview: King County Fire District #2 encompasses 16.04 square miles of developed land and 8.45 miles of majestic coastline. KCFD2 is bordered by Seattle to the North, Tukwila to the East, Sea-Tac to the Southeast, Des Moines to the South, and Puget Sound to the West.
KCFD2 operates four fire stations and provides fire protection and emergency services to the cities of Burien and Normandy Park. KCFD2 also serves the North Highline community located in unincorporated King County. The City of Burien and its surrounding community is a vibrant and creative place; one where residents value diversity, celebrate the arts and culture, promote vitality, and treasure environmental sustainability. Since the city's incorporation in 1993, Burien has continuously sought out growth opportunities and developed itself into a passionate King County city. Residents see Burien, a 100-year-old community with a rich heritage, as a friendly community with well-established neighborhoods and a small-town atmosphere. Our joint suburban communities are economically and culturally diverse, with approximately 25% of our population being born outside the United States, and 20% speaking Spanish as their primary language.
KCFD2 serves as a regional resource for South King County and frequently partners with surrounding fire departments. In the interest of enhanced public service and sustainable economic practices, KCFD2 has entered into an Interlocal Agreement with North Highline Fire District #11 (NHFD) to provide fire and emergency medical services in the area previously covered by NHFD. The Interlocal Service Agreement with NHFD consolidated the fire and emergency medical services of KCFD2 and NHFD. This arrangement achieves better call response times and allows both Districts to operate more efficiently, eliminating costly duplication of efforts.
KCFD2 headquarters station is staffed with a three-person engine, a two-person aid car, and a Battalion Chief. The remaining three stations are each staffed with a three-person engine. In addition to the career staff that work 24-hour shifts, volunteer staff also spend duty nights on shift. In 2024, KCFD2 responded to 13,147 calls for service.
