Position Title: Reserve Firefighter
The Canyon Lake is currently building an eligibility list for Reserve Firefighters. Candidates are required to complete the Public Safety Self-Assessment (PSSA) and a Department Application to be considered for the position.

Have completed the National Testing Network Firefighter Written Test and applied for Canyon Lake.
The most qualified candidates will be invited to an oral interview. If offered a position as a Reserve Firefighter, then a medical and background investigation will be conducted

Applicant must have a satisfactory driving record that will allow the individual to be insurable with the Fire Department’s insurance company.
Essential Job Duties:
The Reserve Firefighter/EMT is a journey-level class within the Fire Department responsible for performing a variety of duties and responsibilities in support of the department’s fire prevention and suppression responsibility.
Responds to fire alarms, rescue alarms, medical emergencies, and other emergency calls to protect life and property; lays and connects hoses; holds nozzle and directs water streams in the control and extinguishing of fires in structures or other objects; uses forcible entry tools, bars, hooks, life-safety lines, ground ladders, chemical extinguishers, and other auxiliary equipment.
Raises and climbs ladders up to 35 feet and may climb a 100-foot aerial ladder; ventilates structures using such techniques as opening windows and cutting or chopping holes through the roof; accomplishes rescue work; removes persons from a danger which may include dragging up to 180 pounds up to 70 feet; accomplishes salvage operations such as placing or throwing salvage covers, sweeping water, and removing the debris; completing all the above while wearing full firefighter personal protective equipment and breathing from a self-contained breathing apparatus.
Responds to requests for medical emergencies to provide immediate care; observe and report vital signs, care for victims of accidents or illness; administer medical treatment to injured or ill persons; provide emergency care at the scene; carry equipment such as trauma bags, drug boxes, monitors, and burn kits; moves patients from various locations to prepare from transportation; operates emergency vehicles in compliance with Fire Department Operations Directives, local, state and federal rules, and regulations; works two 24-hour shifts a month unless otherwise assigned; may be recalled to duty in cases of emergency or department public relations events.
Performs preventive maintenance and daily inspections on fire apparatus equipment; participates in routine daily housekeeping and maintenance of fire facilities; cleans, washes, and services fire apparatus; tests, washes, hangs, and dries hose; changes hose on fire apparatus; reports worn, damaged, or lost items and tools.
Completes and maintains various records and reports; assists in the completion of building pre-plans, participates in fire inspection, prevention, and suppression training programs to maintain occupational skills; attends drills and training classes regarding firefighting techniques, operation of specialized firefighting equipment, design, and construction of buildings, location of exits, entrances, fire alarm boxes, fire hydrants, sprinkler systems, and other related topics; assists with public education programs.
Studies technical material on modern firefighting techniques and water systems; accomplishes general maintenance work in the upkeep of the fire station and grounds, accomplishes routine housekeeping chores such as sweeping, mopping, cooking, washing, and cleaning.
Secures and maintains all certifications and licenses as required by the Fire Department.
Performs other duties as required
Non-Employee Status:
Reserve Firefighters must perform (2) two 24-hour shifts per month. Reserve Firefighters will receive a $100.00 per 24-hour shift stipend to cover such incidentals as travel, meals, etc. This stipend is NOT to be considered hourly pay and is not associated in any way with hourly pay.

While performing the duties of this job, the employee is required to maintain the ability to walk up and down stairs, utilize protective equipment, including eyewear, footwear, respiratory aid, hard hat, gloves, and protective clothing, endure moderate exposure to weather, extreme heat and/or cold, wet and/or humid conditions, high-level noise intensity, vibration, darkness/poor lighting, moving mechanical parts/hazards, high, exposed places, toxic/caustic chemicals, dirt/dust, odors, and other environmental conditions.
Work Environment:
The work environment characteristics described here are representative of those an employee encounter while performing the essential functions of the job. While performing the duties of this job, the employee will be subjected to electrical hazards, fire hazards, and unsafe conditions and may be exposed to wet and/or humid conditions, fumes, hazardous chemicals and materials, intense heat, extreme cold, natural, and manmade disasters and hazards associated with working in and near traffic. The noise level in the work environment varies from moderate to extreme.

Department Overview:
The City of Canyon Lake is located in Southwest Riverside County, halfway between Los Angeles and San Diego, near Lake Elsinore. The city established a municipal fire department on January 1, 2022. The fire department is currently seeking motivated Reserve Firefighters to act as the 4th firefighter on an ALS Type-1 fire engine. The Fire Department is comprised of a Fire Chief, a Staff Battalion Chief, three Fire Captains, three Fire Engineers, and three Firefighter/Paramedics.
There will be three full-time personnel on duty each day staffing an ALS Type 1 structural fire engine. An ALS Type VI wildland engine and Type 1 reserve engine are readily available when necessary. The department is responsible for protecting the close-knit community of approximately 12,000 residents, approximately 4,800 homes. The city is 4.5 square miles with 14.9 miles of shoreline and is adjacent to BLM land to the north.
