Position Title: Full-Time Patrol Officer

Salary Information:

Year 1 - $28.03/hour
Year 2 - $31.45/hour
Year 3 - $34.43
Senior Patrol Officer (After 8 years of service) $35.81
4% increase in salary for Associate's Degree
5% increase in salary for Bachelor's Degree
6% increase for Master's Degree (5% in salary + 1% annual bonus)

Pay scale based on 2022-2025 Collective Bargaining Agreement with the Fraternal Order of Police

Department Overview: Perkins Township Police Department is dedicated to protecting life, liberty, and justice. We are committed to providing fair and equal treatment to everyone in our community. The Police Department is comprised of various operating divisions including patrol, detective bureau, two K9 units, School Resource Officer, Community Resource Officer, and members may also be assigned to a Special Response Team. A Police Chief and three Sergeants form the command staff for the department.

Perkins Township is organized and operates under the laws of the State of Ohio as well as local resolutions, laws, and policies intended to provide for effective, and responsive governance.

Community Safety: The safety of the public and our staff is always at the forefront of what we do. Our Police Department embraces the advantages of “community policing” and has an excellent relationship and regularly coordinates with our other partners in local, county, state, and federal law enforcement agencies. Our School Resource Officer program is also seen as crucial in providing a bridge to our students and in ensuring their safety. The Police Department not only provides professional safety services to the community, but they also partner directly with the School District in providing ongoing training related to school safety.

Area Information: The Township is the gateway to Cedar Point, Lake Erie, and the Islands which are all major tourist destinations. The availability of excellent highway access and a significant supply of vacant, developable land have all contributed to this community’s position as the principal commercial core of Erie County as well as many abutting counties. Perkins Township is home to over 1,000 businesses including national chains and local entrepreneurs.

Essential Duties:

Required to perform shift work which may include days, evenings, and nights including weekends and holidays.
Perform security patrols, traffic control, investigation and first aid at accidents, detection, investigation, and arrest of persons involved in crimes or misconduct.
Works an assigned shift using own judgement, expected to handle difficult and emergency situations without assistance.
Maintain normal availability by radio or telephone to respond to police matters.
Carry out duties in conformance with Federal, State, County, and Township laws and ordinances.
Patrol Township streets, parks, commercial, and residential areas to preserve the peace and enforce the law, control vehicular traffic, prevent or detect and investigate misconduct involving misdemeanors, felonies, and other law violations; and to otherwise serve and protect.
Respond to emergency radio calls and investigate accidents, robberies, civil disturbances, domestic disputes, fights, drunkenness, missing children, prowlers, abuse of drugs, etc. and take appropriate law enforcement action.
Interrogate suspects, witnesses, and drivers.
Preserve evidence, arrest or cite violators, investigate and render assistance at scene of vehicular accidents.
Conduct follow-up investigations of crimes committed during assigned shift. Seek out and question victims, witnesses, and suspects. Develop leads and tips. Search scene of crime for clues and evaluate evidence.
Prepare cases for giving testimony and testify in court proceedings.
Prepare a variety of reports such as offense/incidents, OVI, towed vehicle, and accident reports.
Undertake community policing and assist citizens with such matters as stalled vehicles, crime prevention, drug abuse, traffic, bicycle safety, etc.
Coordinate activities with officers or other Township departments as needed.
Use excellent customer service skills to establish and maintain effective working relationships with other employees, officials, and all members of the general public.
Operate a motor vehicle to carry out the business of the department and Township.
Attendance at work is an essential function of this position.

Non-Essential Duties:

Ability to operate a personal computer using standard or customized software applications.
Ability and willingness to quickly learn and put to use new skills and knowledge brought by rapidly changing information and/or technology.
Maintain departmental equipment, supplies, and facilities.
Maintain contact with the general public, court officials, and other Township officials in the performance of police operating activities.
