Position Title: Firefighter
The Manhattan Fire Department is currently hiring for the position of Firefighter! Candidates will be required to complete the following before the close date of February 20, 2026 to be considered for the position:
Salary Information: $50,086 without an EMT to $52,736 with an EMT annually starting
Benefits Information: Paid vacation, medical, emergency, and parental leave. Kansas Police and Fire (KP&F) Retirement and local pension through Fireman’s Relief Association.

Department Overview:
The Manhattan Fire Department is a paid fire department that operates out of 5 fire stations with 90 firefighting personnel on staff. The department provides fire suppression, emergency medical first response, ARFF, technician level hazardous material response, and technical rescue including vehicle extrication, trench, high and low angle, surface water, structural collapse, confined space, and wide area search. The department serves as a Type I regional hazardous materials response team primarily serving 8 counties in the surrounding area. The department is an active member of Northeast Kansas Task Force 2, along with other area departments, and is tasked to cover 23 counties for urban and search and rescue response. MFD also has many specialties including the Risk Reduction Division, honor guard, search canine, fire investigations, and a drone program.

Manhattan is home to Kansas State University and a neighbor to Fort Riley Army Installation. Nestled in the beautiful Flint Hills, Manhattan has many trails and outdoor opportunities and is adjacent to Tuttle Creek Reservoir and the Kansas River. Manhattan Airport is the second busiest commercial airport in Kansas, with daily flights to Dallas and Chicago. Manhattan is an anchor to the animal health corridor and is the location of the National Bio and Agro-Defense (NBAF) Facility and the Biosecurity Research Institute that study diseases that threaten the animal agricultural industry and public health.

Applicants must possess Kansas Certified Emergency Medical Technician (EMT) or National Registry EMT within one year of date of hire. If applicant does not have the EMT certification, a class will be provided by Manhattan Fire Department and successful completion of State Boards is required. Applicants with the National Registry certification must obtain the Kansas EMT certification within 60 days of date of hire.
Additional Requirements:
Applicants must have a valid (date of issue within 1 year of application deadline) Candidate Physical Ability Test (CPAT) certificate.
Applicants must have passed the FireTEAM Ergometric through National Testing Network (NTN), within two years prior to application deadline. Applicants possessing a bachelor’s degree from an accredited college or university are exempt from the FireTEAM Ergometric testing requirement.

Application must be made with the City of Manhattan. Proof of EMT certification, if applicant possesses the certification; FireTEAM Ergometric or proof of bachelor’s degree; and CPAT required with application.
