Academy Certification:
Applicants must meet one of the following criteria: • Hold a current State of Florida Law Enforcement Certification ~OR~ • Hold a current Out of State Law Enforcement Certification ~AND~ • Accepted into, currently attending or completed a State of Florida Police Academy or Equivalency of Training Program ~OR~ • In process of enrollment to a State of Florida Police Academy of Equivalency of Training Program

Prior Experience:
Not required but some prior experience may be creditable for years of service for pay purposes.

Not have been convicted of a felony or a misdemeanor which involves perjury or a false statement.
Not have pled guilty or nolo contendre after July 01, 1981, to a felony or a misdemeanor which involves perjury or a false statement, whether or not adjudication was withheld or sentence suspended.

WORK OBJECTIVE:

General police work in the protection of life and property, enforcement of laws and ordinances, and the prevention of crime. Employees perform duties in accordance with departmental rules and regulations and in consonance with existing laws and ordinances. Work is performed under the supervision of superior officers through assignment of duties, personal inspection, and review of reports. While at all times recognizing the social aspects of police functions in dealing with the public, officers must be able to act quickly and exercise sound judgment and discretion in situations involving police powers without immediate supervision.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS
The list of essential functions, as outlined herein, is intended to be representative of the tasks performed within this classification. It is not necessarily descriptive of any one position in the class. The omission of an essential function does not preclude management from assigning duties not listed herein if such duties are a logical assignment to the position.

Patrols assigned area on foot, bicycle, motorcycle, or in police vehicle to control traffic, prevent crime or disturbance of peace, and arrest violators.
Maintains radio contact with headquarters and supervisor via two-way radio; notes suspicious persons and establishments and reports unusual activity to supervisor.
Responds to calls involving criminal violations; secures scene to restore peace and protect evidence; calls for back-up assistance as needed.
Interviews complainants, witnesses, and/or informants to obtain facts relevant to the incident/case.
Conducts searches of persons and/or property to obtain weapons, illegal drugs, stolen property and other evidence; seizes contraband and stolen property.
Advises suspects of their legal rights; conducts interrogations; warns and/or arrests persons in violation of the law; may be required to use force in the apprehension of suspects.
Completes field incident, arrest, booking and related police reports in accordance with departmental policy and state statutes; testifies in court as needed.
Conducts routine follow-up investigations as assigned; conducts stakeouts, surveillance, and searches of persons/property to collect evidence; may collect prints and other evidence at scenes.
Directs and reroutes traffic around fires, accidents, parades, special events, or other disruption; disperses and controls crowds; secures scene to protect victims and property.
Provides first aid and calls for medical assistance.
Issues traffic summonses and warnings, parking citations, and vehicle repair notices as needed.
Gives general information to citizens concerning the location of streets, routes, and buildings.
Gives talks before school and community groups on juvenile delinquency, crime prevention, and police policy and operations.
Assists in the training of departmental personnel and in the analysis of statistical and other data pertaining to police operations.
May be assigned to a specific section within the department requiring the performance of specialized duties, e.g., recruitment, training, evidence, operations, analysis, public relations, legal research.
Performs related duties as directed when such duties are logical/appropriate assignment to position.

Knowledge, Skills, & Abilities:
- Knowledge of the current principles, methods, and practices of law enforcement.

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS:

As a condition of employment under the Collective Bargaining Agreement all employees must be free of tobacco use and must remain continually free of any tobacco use as a requirement for continued employment with the City of Ocoee Police Department. Tasks involve the intermittent performance of extremely physically demanding work, typically involving some combination of reaching, bending, stooping, kneeling, crouching, running, climbing, and that may involve the lifting, carrying, pushing, and/or pulling of extremely heavy objects (150+ pounds), such as in the event of chasing and subduing a suspect resisting arrest. Some tasks are performed with potential for intermittent exposure to disagreeable elements including, but not limited to, heat, humidity, inclement weather, loud noise, toxic/chemical agents, electrical currents, pathogens, violent behavior, weapons, explosives, animals. Tasks include working around moving parts, vehicles, equipment, carts, and materials handling, where extremely heightened awareness to surroundings and environment is essential in the preservation of life and property. Standard body gear and equipment applies in the preservation of life and property, as does special equipment based on assignment including, but not limited to, various types of body armor and safety gear.
