Position Title: Firefighter/EMT/Paramedic
The Thornton Fire Department is hiring for the position of Firefighter/Paramedic. Candidates are required to complete NTN's FireTEAM exam, PHQ, and PSSA by March 20, 2026 to be considered for the position.
Salary Information:
1st year FF/PM $56,000.00
2nd year FF/PM $60,500.00
3rd Year FF/PM $62,000.00
4th Year $65,000.00

Department Overview:
The Village Of Thornton: The Village of Thornton, Illinois (pop. 2500) will hold a written examination from January 26, 2026 to March 20th 2026 to establish a two-year eligibility list for the position of Full-Time Firefighter/EMT/Paramedic. Benefits include medical, dental, vision and Life. The Village of Thornton is an equal opportunity employer.
The department currently has 10 career fire personnel including the Fire Chief, Deputy Fire Chief, Three Captains, Two Engineer and Three Firefighters. All members are paramedics or EMT-B operating under the guidance of the South Cook County Emergency Medical Services System.
Population: 2,500
Age: 21 and under 35 years of age, unless otherwise allowed by Illinois State Statute
Citizenship Required: Legal resident of the United States of America
High School Grad/GED: High school diploma, G.E.D. certificate or equivalent
Valid ILLINOIS Driver's License: Possess a valid Illinois Driver’s License or equivalent
Ability to Read/Speak English: Be capable of reading, speaking, and writing in the English language
Vision: Medical evaluation including vision and other requirements in accordance with the current edition of NFPA 1582
College: Not Required
Academy Certification: Successful completion of the Illinois Firefighter Basic Operations Course (IF NOT CERTIFITED)
Prior Experience: Not Required
Necessary Certifications: Must be an Illinois State certified Paramedic at time of hire.
Additional Requirements: Submit Military DD214 (if applicable)
Hiring Process:Step 1: The NTN examination.Step: 2 CPAT card at time of hire.Step 3: Complete an oral interview with the Thornton Board of Fire and Police Commissioners.Step 4: Pass a thorough background investigationStep 5: Pass a medical screening, and drug screening. Immediate Disqualifiers:
Preference Points:Military Points: Applicants who served in the United States military for at least one (1) year and who are honorably discharged, or are now on inactive or reserve duty in such military or naval service, shall receive five (5) points. Proof of such service must include a copy of Military Form DD-214 (long form) as proof of active service and evidence of the honorable discharge at time of application to qualify.Fire Service Experience: Applicants who were or are employed as Illinois OSFM firefighter-EMT-paramedic by a fire protection district or municipality for at least two (2) years shall be awarded up to five (5) experience preference points.Resident Applicants that currently live within the village of Thornton shall be awarded up to five (5) preference points.Proof of such service must include submission of copies of applicable certificates to the village Hall no later than 10 days of the first posting. Note that proof of service may be verified by the Village. Also note that an applicant may not receive the full amount of experience preference points if the amount of points awarded would place the applicant before a veteran on the Final Eligibility Register.
