Position Title: Corrections Deputy

Testing on NTN will be open continuously until further notice. Testing results will be pulled periodically by the Sheriff as vacancies occur.

Candidates are required to complete NTN's REACT Test and PSSA to move forward in the hiring process.

Salary Information: Starting Pay $63,460 ($30.51/hr)

Department Overview: The Sheriff’s Office mission is to serve and protect all citizens of DeKalb County by providing the highest quality of law enforcement and correctional services in the most professional manner. The DeKalb County Sheriff’s Office oversees the DeKalb County Jail. The jail has two housing units which has a technical capacity of 140 inmates. The jail is staffed 24 hours a day, 365 days a year.

County Information: DeKalb County is approximately 632.7 square miles, located 63 miles west of Chicago. There are 19 townships in the county with the county seat located in Sycamore, IL. DeKalb County is also home to Northern Illinois University located in DeKalb and Kishwaukee Community College located in Malta, IL.

Additional Requirements:
Requires knowledge, skill, and mental development equivalent to graduation from an accredited high school. Ability to apply common sense understanding to carry out instructions furnished in written, oral or diagram form. Ability to deal with problems involving several variables in unusual situations. Ability to work in stressful situations. New employees must also successfully pass all aspects of the Correctional Field Training Program within the first year of employment and become State Certified Corrections Officers from the Illinois Training Board. The criteria for certification are two hundred (200) hours of academy training.

JOB SUMMARY:

Correction deputies under general supervision, perform booking and bonding functions, enforce rules, and maintain security at the County Jail facility; provide daily supervision and positive direction to inmates, ensuring their welfare and the security of the facility. Complete transports to other institutions/detention facilities and perform other related duties as required.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS

Performs security checks on building and inmates.
Processes intake and release of inmates.
Provides security and transportation of inmates to and from medical facilities, court, and other detention facilities.
Supervises and maintains order and security during meals, attorney visits and recreation of inmates.
Conducts searches of visitors, inmates, and inmate housing areas for contraband.
Provides direct supervision of trustees assisting in cleaning and meal delivery activities.
Provides support and personal counsel to inmates who need or request it.
Remain alert to possible dangerous or emergency situations taking preventative measures; prevent inmate confrontation, breaks up inmate altercations.
Prepares concise and accurate reports following incidents of consequence and maintains accurate records, logs, and files.
Read and write reports and other documents.
May serve warrants, summons and subpoenas as directed.
Performs other related duties as required.

Must be able to work in a security type environment and manage stressful and potentially dangerous/difficult inmate contact situations.
Analyze situations and provide effective action.
Communicate effectively both orally and in writing.

Qualify with department approved weapons.
Give and comprehend verbal and written instructions.
Establish and maintain effective working relationships.
Gather, analyze and evaluate data and provide sound decisions.
Perform manual tasks associated with operating the Correctional Center.
May have to physically restrain arrestees and engage in a physical confrontation to take actively resisting persons into custody.
While performing the essential functions of this job the employee is frequently required to stand, walk, sit, use hands and communicate clearly.

SCHEDULING
The position involves regular and irregular shift work and shift rotations necessary to provide jail security for inmates 24 hours/day, 7 days/week, 52 weeks/year (weekends and holidays included). Work shifts are normally 12 hours in duration, but may be extended in the event of emergency, disaster, manpower shortage, work load, or work-in-progress.

Illegal Drug Use - Marijuana use will be evaluated on a case-by-case basis.
Applicants who have used any other illegal drug within the past five (5) years will be disqualified.
Any felony conviction
Driving Record - This includes receiving a DUI/DWAI within the past five (5) years, having your driver's license suspended for any reason within the past five (5) years, and having five (5) or more tickets within the past five (5) years.
Outside activities which may be deemed a conflict of interest
Revelation or discovery of assaultive behavior
Documented record of prior poor work performance
Unsuccessful completion of any basic requirement
Inability to perform the essential functions of the position
Police history - type, frequency, and nature of contacts(s)
Providing false or misleading information during the application/selection process
