JOB ANNOUNCEMENTMay 2, 2025The City of La Grande is accepting applications for the following position:
FIREFIGHTER - ENTRY LEVEL OR LATERAL TRANSFER
GENERAL STATEMENT OF DUTIES:As a member of the fire department and under the direct supervision of a fire department captain, a firefighter performs firefighting, rescue, emergency medical care and other types of emergency response related duties. Participates in fire prevention, code enforcement, and public safety education activities. Helps to maintain and make minor repairs to the fire station, fire apparatus and emergency response equipment. Participates in training and personal development activities necessary to acquire and maintain the knowledge and skills needed to perform the duties of a firefighter in a proficient and safe manner.
MANDATORY REQUIREMENTS:• High School diploma or GED• Must be 18 years of age• State of Oregon Emergency Medical Technician- Basic Level or higher• Must successfully complete department oral board, background and medical screening prior to hiring• Must successfully complete FireTeam written exam (before submitting application) and National Testing Network Candidate Physical Ability Test (before submitting application). Both tests must be taken no more than one year prior to application date.• Valid Oregon driver’s license, or obtain within 30 days of employment• Reside within 100 road miles of the fire station within 30 days of employment
ADDITIONAL LATERAL TRANSFER REQUIRMENTS:• 3 years’ experience as a career firefighter• NFPA FF 1 Certification
DESIREABLE QUALIFICATIONS:• NFPA Firefighter 1 certification• EMT Advanced, Intermediate or Paramedic level certification• Hazardous Materials Awareness and Operations certification• Associates Degree or Higher
LATERAL TRANSFER DESIREABLE QUALIFICATIONS:• NFPA Firefighter 2 Certification• NFPA Driver certification• Hazardous Materials Awareness and Operations certification
WAGE: Effective 9/21/24 $68,920.47- $87,217.10 annually (includes mandatory FLSA Overtime pay and City paid 3% deferred compensation contribution) Additional benefits include incentive pay for education and advanced certifications. Lateral transfers wage depends on experience.
BENEFITS: Medical, Dental, Vision, Life Insurance, Long-Term Disability, Air and Ground Ambulance Membership, and contributions into a Health Savings Account every three months based on tier. (Employee cost share for Medical, Dental, Vision is 10% of premiums)
