GENERAL STATEMENT OF DUTIES
This position is responsible for enforcing federal, state and local traffic, criminal and civil laws. Duties are varied and performed within established guidelines requiring sound judgment to determine appropriate procedure. EOE, Veterans Preference.
SUPERVISION RECEIVED
This position is under the general supervision of the Undersheriff and Sergeants.
SUPERVISION EXERCISED
Supervision of other employees is not a responsibility of positions in this classification.
EXAMPLES OF PRINCIPAL DUTIES
(The following description of duties may not be all inclusive and other duties may be assigned at the discretion of management).
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS
Must pass or provide proof of Police Officer Selection test with a minimum score of 70 points
Must be a U.S. citizen
Minimum age 21
High school diploma or GED
Experience or training which would demonstrate the ability to perform the duties of the position;
SPECIAL QUALIFICATIONS
Must have a clean, acceptable driving record that qualifies per the County's vehicle policy.
Possession of/or ability to obtain DPSST (Dept. of Public Safety Standards and Training) certification within one year of employment.
NOTE: felony convictions may be disqualifying.
PREFERRED KNOWLEDGE AND SKILLS:
Experience with communication and serving the public.
Law enforcement terminology and technology
Some knowledge of the methods used in the care and custody of prisoners.
Experience with writing detailed reports
KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES REQUIRED BY THIS POSITION
Knowledge of: law enforcement terminology and technology; standard office procedures and practices. Some knowledge of the methods used in the care and custody of prisoners.
Skill in: operating a variety of office equipment such as copiers, computers, computer printers, fax machines and multi-line telephone systems; typing rapidly and accurately; processing information by use of computer.
Ability to: analyze situations quickly and objectively and to determine the proper course of action; ability to follow instructions both orally and in writing; ability to comprehend policies and procedures; ability to communicate clearly and effectively both orally and in writing; ability to maintain accurate records; ability to maintain effective working relationships with co-workers, inmates, and the public; ability to respond to emergency situations in a calm and efficient manner; ability to maintain confidentiality.
PHYSICAL DEMANDS AND WORK ENVIRONMENT
While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly required to sit, stand, walk, talk, hear, and use hands and fingers to operate a standard keyboard, use a computer, printer, copier, fax, telephone, radios, handgun, handcuffs, shackles and other restraint devices, chemical agents, collapsible baton, firearm, and bullet resistant vest. The employee may be required to climb, crouch, crawl, bend or stoop, push, pull or drag objects. The employee must occasionally lift and/or move over 50 pounds and must be able to control an unruly individual. Specific vision abilities required by the job include close vision, color and distance vision, depth perception and the ability to adjust focus. Additional requirements include the ability to speak, read, and write.
The nature of the work involves exposure to unpredictable situations, which may hazard life or limb. Exposed to prisoners. Potential exists to be exposed to blood borne pathogens. The noise level in the work environment is usually moderate to loud. Approximately 30 to 40 percent of the work time may be spent outdoors in all seasons. Must be able to deal with crime scene situations up to and including homicides. Constant exposure to high stress levels.
