Position: Police Officer Trainee

The Stockton Police Department (SPD) is actively recruiting for the role of Police Officer Trainee! This is an incredible opportunity to embark on a rewarding career in law enforcement, serving and protecting Stockton’s diverse community of over 320,000 residents.

Application Window: Open on a continuous basis
Starting Salary: $6,339.58 per month during academy training
Academy Sponsorship: SPD fully sponsors academy attendance and may assist with housing expenses.
Post-Academy Salary: $7,476.28–$9,605.38 per month upon successful academy completion

About the Stockton Police Department
A career at SPD offers a variety of dynamic opportunities. Serving California’s eleventh-largest city, SPD officers work to protect and engage Stockton’s diverse population. Known for its robust training programs, SPD equips officers to independently manage responsibilities, including public safety, crime prevention, and law enforcement. SPD officers work a four-day, ten-hour shift and can join specialized units such as Air Support, Crisis Negotiations Team, Bomb Squad, Canine Unit, SWAT, Motors, and Mobile Field Force.

Job Requirements

Age: Minimum 20 years at application, 21 at appointment
Citizenship: Legal eligibility to work in the United States
Education: High school diploma or GED from an accredited association (college coursework preferred)
Driver’s License: California C driver’s license with satisfactory driving record required
Language Skills: Proficient in English grammar, spelling, and punctuation
Vision: 20/100 uncorrected; 20/30 corrected; no color blindness
Certification: None required
Experience: None required

Additional Requirements: Successful candidates will undergo a thorough background investigation, computer voice stress analysis (CVSA) and psychological assessments, and California DOJ fingerprint clearance. Candidates must be free from any conditions, biases, or impairments affecting their capacity to serve as peace officers.

Physical and Availability Requirements

Must complete physical agility testing including:

30 air squats within 2 minutes
15 push-ups within 1 minute 30 seconds
Plank for 1 minute
500-yard run within 2 minutes 45 seconds

Must be available to work rotating shifts, including nights, weekends, and holidays.

Hiring Process

Application Review
Written Examination (NTN or PELLET-B Test)
Physical Agility Testing
Background Check, DOJ Fingerprinting, and Psychological Evaluation
Pre-employment Medical Exam

Eligibility List
Successful candidates will be added to the SPD eligibility list.

Working Conditions and Residency

Shift: 4/10 schedule; two weekends off monthly
Residency: Must reside within 45 minutes of City Hall within 3 months of hire
Disaster Service Requirement: All SPD employees are designated as disaster service workers per California Government Code §3100, required to report for duty during emergencies.
