Position Title: Firefighter/Paramedic
The Mundelein Fire Department is currently hiring for the position of Firefighter/Paramedic. Candidates are required to complete the NTN Fireteam exam and PHQ/Application. In addition, candidates are required to upload all preference point documents and certifications via their NTN account homepage. All testing and documents must be completed no later than May 1, 2026.

Job Summary Description:The Firefighter / Paramedic Performs duties, both in emergency and non emergency situations, related to fire protection, emergency medical services (EMS), hazardous materials response, and emergency management delivery. Serves as the principal hands-on labor in providing fire department emergency and non-emergency services to the community.
Firefighter/Paramedic Minimum Requirements:• Salary Range: $88,268 - $123,317, per CBA effective May 1, 2026. Longevity pay beginning in year 10 • U.S. Citizenship• High school diploma or equivalent (GED)• Valid driver’s license• No residency requirement• Must be 21 to under 35 years of age at time the applications close (05/1/2026), unless otherwise exempt by state statute (65ILCS 5/10-1-7). 20-year-olds can apply but will need to be 21 by the time of the conditional offer of employment.• Preferred: Candidate possesses a current Illinois Department of Public Health (IDPH) EMT-Paramedic license and must test into the Northwestern Lake Forest Medical System. If the candidate does not possess this licensure, the following options will apply:• Option 1: By time of the conditional offer of employment, the candidate is a certified Firefighter II/Basic Operations Firefighter with the Illinois Office of the State Fire Marshal (OSFM) AND within three (3) months of successfully completing a paramedic program and obtaining an Illinois Department of Public Health (IDPH) EMT-Paramedic license. The candidate must then test into the Lake Forest Medical System.• Option 2: By time of conditional offer of employment, the candidate possesses a current Illinois Department of Public Health (IDPH) EMT- Paramedic license but is not a certified Firefighter II/Basic Operations Firefighter with the Illinois Office of the State Fire Marshal (OSFM). These candidates will be required to attend a regional fire academy.• The candidate must have a current and valid Candidate Physical Ability Test (CPAT) and Aerial Ladder Climb Certification.• Must be of good character and must not have been convicted of any crimes or guilty of infamous or notoriously disgraceful conduct as described in the IL Compiled Statutes (65ILCS 5/10-2.1-6)• All applicants who are given conditional offers of employment must complete a polygraph examination, a psychological evaluation, and a thorough preemployment physical including drug screening._______________________________________________________________________________________
Preference Point Information (Maximum of 10 points):• Military Veteran: 5 points - Requires DD-214 form with documentation of an honorable discharge.• Education: 5 points maximum – (only one degree is considered) o associate degree: 2.5 points with documentation bachelor’s degree: 5 points with documentation• Paramedic: 5 points maximum – points awarded for full years only o 0.5 points per full year• Experience: 5 points maximum – points awarded for full years only o Paid-on-Call certified Firefighter II/basic and/or paramedic of the Village of Mundelein: 0.5 points for each year of successful service (max 5 points)• Paid-on-Call certified Firefighter III/advanced and/or paramedic of the Village of Mundelein: 1 point for each year of successful service (max 5 points)• Applicants who, on or after 24 August 2018, has been a contracted firefighter/paramedic for the Village of Mundelein shall be awarded one (1) point per year of successful service, up to a maximum of five (5) points at the time of initial hire.• Applicants from outside the Village of Mundelein who were employed as full-time certified Basic Operations Firefighter (BOF) for at least two (2) years by a fire protection district or another municipality: 0.5 point for each full year of service (max 3 points)• Applicants from outside the Village of Mundelein who were employed as full time certified Advanced Firefighte Technicain (ATF) for at least two (2) years by a fire protection district or another municipality: 0.5 point for each full year of service (max 5 points)• Applicants for firefighter/paramedic may only receive a maximum of ten (10) points for a combination of veterans, experience, and/or education. No application of experience preference points may be allowed that will cause any candidate on the Initial or Preliminary Eligibility List to pass over or be listed above a veteran._______________________________________________________________________________________
Training:Once hired, recruits begin a 12-month probationary period.

Deferred Compensation: Full time Village employees may participate in deferred Compensation Plan (457)
Fire Pension: All sworn Firefighters are eligible to apply for participation in the Mundelein Firefighters Pension Fund. Within three (3) months after being appointed to the sworn position, the Firefighter must make written application tothe Pension Board if they wish to participate. The Fire Pension Board will decide to accept or reject the application as provided by the Fire Pension Act of the Illinois Compiled Statutes.
Work Schedule: Mundelein Firefighters work a 24/48-hour shift.
Union Membership: Firefighter/Paramedics will be members of IAFF Local 4786
Holidays: Currently each full time Firefighter working a 24/48-hour shift schedule will be given four (4) floating holidays per year.
Kelly Days: Currently each full time Firefighter working a 24/48-hour shift schedule will be given seven (7) Kelly Days per year.
Vacation Eligibility:1. After completing one (1) full year of continuous service, an employee working a 24/48 schedule is eligible for six (6) twenty-four- hour days of vacation.2. January 1st of your fifth (5th) year of continuous service, an employee working a 24/48-hour schedule is eligible for eight (8) twenty-four-hour days of vacation.3. January 1st of your tenth (10th) year of continuous service, an employee working 24/48-hour schedule is eligible for eleven (11) twenty-four-hour days of vacation.4. January 1st of your fifteenth (15th) year of continuous service, an employee working 24/48-hour schedule is eligible for eleven and one half (11.5) twenty-four-hour days of vacation.5.
