Department Overview:
Tusayan Fire District (TFD) is located at the entrance to the Grand Canyon National Park South Rim and is surrounded by the Kaibab National Forest. TFD provides emergency response services to 500 year-round residents and over 6 million visitors a year. We are proud to hold a Public Protection Classification ISO rating of 04/4X. Our rural district encompasses 5 square miles; however, we service an area within a 45-mile radius of Tusayan. Established in 1996 as an all-volunteer district, TFD continues to grow; now having 10 full-time paid careers and 8 committed volunteers. Tusayan Fire has one station with 24-hour staffing. We have incredible relations and mutual aid responses with the Grand Canyon National Park, Grand Canyon National Park Airport, Forest Service – Kaibab National Forest, the Town of Tusayan, and the community of Valle. Working at Tusayan Fire provides an opportunity to excel in a variety of fire service roles. Every member of our growing family gets the opportunity to cross-train for every role on the fire grounds. Our crews respond to roughly 400 calls annually; responding to everything, including by not limited to, MCIs, structural fires, wildland fires, medical calls, MVAs, public assists, plane crashes, and much more. TFD is passionate about providing Public Education and CPR, AED, and First Aid courses to our community. TFD is growing our Volunteer and Wildland programs. Another added benefit: TFD runs a 2-on-5 off-set schedule each week. You only work a set 2 days each week! Our 48-hour shifts per week total 2,496 annual hours. That is 416 fewer hours annually than most fire departments, with no reduction in pay. Overtime is available for those who want it. This gives employees who live far away, 5 consecutive days per week, freedom and consistency in their personal lives. TFD has no residency requirement.
City Area: Tusayan Fire is located in the small rural town of Tusayan within Coconino County. Our community is most widely recognized as the gateway to the Grand Canyon National Park (GCNP) just 1 mile to our north. Our town is one mile long with Highway 64 running directly through our district. To the east, west, and south we are surrounded by the pristine Kaibab National Forest. Our community provides an abundance of hiking, biking, camping, picnicking, hunting, ATV trails, and other outdoor activities in the GCNP and high desert Ponderosa pine forests. TFD is nestled into this incredibly loving, supportive small town, but gets the opportunity to serve a global population on a daily basis. We are a fire family for sure that is heavily dependent on our volunteers and we strive to train as much as physically possible
Population: Being a tourism-based community, Tusayan has roughly 500 year-round residences (that number doubles in the summer months,) with over 6 million visitors a year traveling through to visit the Grand Canyon using our emergency response network.
