Job Summary:
To respond to fire alarms, hazardous materials incidents, medical emergencies and other calls to protect life and property; to operate and maintain a variety of fire and rescue apparatus and equipment; and to participate in fire prevention, training, and station and equipment maintenance activities.

KNOWLEDGE, ABILITIES AND SKILLS:
Working knowledge of driver safety and first aid. Ability to learn the operation of fire suppression and other emergency equipment. Ability to learn to apply standard firefighting, emergency aid, hazardous materials and fire prevention techniques. Ability to perform strenuous or peak physical effort during emergency, training or station maintenance activities for prolonged periods of time under conditions of extreme heights, intense heat, cold and/or smoke. Ability to act effectively in emergency and stressful situations. Ability to follow verbal and written instructions and communicate effectively both orally and in writing. Ability to meet minimum health and physical fitness standards. Ability to climb ladders and work at considerable heights.
MINIMUM EDUCATION, EXPERIENCE AND CERTIFICATION:
High school diploma or equivalent. Prefer 15 hours of college credit. Texas basic firefighter certification and Texas Department of State Health Services (DSHS) EMT-Basic certification required. Valid Texas Class B driver’s license required within one (1) year of date of employment. Driving record that meets City guidelines. Employee may be required to obtain other specialized training to meet the needs of the fire department.
Physical and Environmental Conditions:
Employee is frequently required to stand, walk, use hands to finger, handle, or operate objects, tools, or controls; and reach with hands and arms. The employee is occasionally required to sit, climb or balance; stoop, kneel, crouch or crawl; talk and hear; and taste or smell. Employee must frequently lift and/or move up to 10 lbs. and occasionally lift up to 150 pounds. Specific vision abilities required include close vision, distance vision, co-peripheral vision, depth perception, and the ability to adjust focus. Employee regularly works in outside weather conditions. Occasionally works near moving mechanical parts and in high, precarious places; occasionally exposed to wet and/or humid conditions, fumes or airborne particles, toxic or caustic chemicals; risk of electrical shock and vibration. Possibility of severe injury or loss of life while fighting fires or providing medical services. Noise level is usually moderate.
