2025-2026 Vernon Fire Rescue Services Career Hiring Process
This is a general guide to the Vernon Fire Rescue Services hiring process. By participating in the hiring process, you are competing for a spot in the department. Additionally, candidates may be selected for a spot on the Eligibility List for future positions. The stages, requirements, and dates listed are subject to change.
Steps to complete online application by November 28, 2025 through National Testing Network (NTN):
Stage 2 – Physical Fitness Evaluation – tbd
Candidates who are successful in Stage 1 of the hiring process will be invited to Vernon for physical fitness evaluation, conducted by Ascent Lifestyle Management Inc. Candidates will be given an appointment time and date for their physical evaluation. The evaluation will take approximately 2-3 hours to complete. The cost of the evaluation is $250 (CAD), non-refundable and is the responsibility of the candidate.
Candidates will be required to provide the following forms to participate in the physical evaluation. Forms will be provided to candidates in advance.
Candidates will be tested on aerobic fitness and job-specific tasks:

Job Simulation Performance Tests
Twenty Meter Shuttle Run to a minimum of Stage 6.5 with increasing test scores to Stage 10.
1. Claustrophobia (search confined area - pass/fail)
2. Acrophobia (ladder climb- pass/fail)
3. Hose carry/stair climb (85 lb up & down stairs several times – timed for pass)
4. Ladder lift (56 lb - pass/fail)
5. Rope pull (50 lb up & down several times – timed for pass)
6. Simulated hose advance (135 lb over 50 ft – timed for pass)
7. Victim drag (200 lb over 50 ft – timed for pass)
8. Forced entry (pass/fail)
Stage 3 – In-person Interview – tbd
Candidates who are successful in passing Stage 2 will attend their scheduled in-person interview. Interviews will be held at City Hall (3400 30th Street), across the road from Fire Hall Station 1.
Stage 4 – References and Police Information Checks
Candidates who are successful in Stage 3 will be asked for references and to submit to a Police Information Check with the Vulnerable Sector attached, from their local Police detachment.
Human Resources may ask for supporting references to verify the information provided. All references may be contacted.
Candidates with any other requirements still outstanding will be required to submit them by this stage.
Stage 5 – Conditional Offers and Pre-Employment Medical Evaluation
Successful completion of Stage 4 may lead to a conditional offer of employment. The offer of employment is dependent on passing a NFPA medical conditions evaluation.
The process for the medical evaluation is as follows:
Stage 6 – Pool of Candidates and Offers of Employment
Offer(s) of employment will be made to candidate(s) and remaining candidates may be placed into a pool for future vacancies.
