Position Title: Firefighter/Paramedic

The Marengo Fire Rescue Department is currently building an eligibility list for the position of Firefighter/Paramedic. Candidates must complete NTN's FireTEAM exam.

This position requires the Candidate Physical Ability Test with ladder certification (CPAT with Ladder) dated within the last 12 months at the time of application.

Necessary Certifications :

Illinois State Fire Marshal: Basic Operation FF or FF II
Illinois or Nationally licensed Paramedic, or:
Illinois or Nationally licensed EMT-B that is currently accepted or enrolled and in good standing in an accredited and accepted IDPH Paramedic program* at time of conditional offer.
CPAT with Ladder Endorsement required at time of application (may be waived for lateral hire)

*ALL EMPLOYEES MUST ACHIEVE AND HOLD AN IDPH PARAMEDIC LICENSE WITHIN THE MARENGO FIRE- RESCUE EMS REGION, WITHIN THE PROBATIONARY PERIOD OF EMPLOYMENT WHICH MAY BE EXTENDED. EMPLOYEES WILL BE LIMITED TO THREE ATTEMPTS TO PASS THE NATIONAL PARAMEDIC CERTIFICATION TEST. FAILURE TO ACHIEVE ANY OF THESE REQUIREMENTS WILL BE CAUSE FOR SEPARATION.

Hiring Process:

National Testing Network Fire Team exam
- Applicants must upload Drivers License, EMT-B or Paramedic License, CPAT with Ladder Climb, and Firefighter II or BOF in "Candidate Documents" (Failure to do so will disqualify candidates from being placed on the Initial elegibility list.)
- Initial elegibility list will be emailed to all canidates

Submission of Preference Points Claim Form :

Candidates who are eligible for veterans, educational, experience, residency, and district employees preference MUST make a claim for those addition points within ten (10) days after the initial eligiblity list is posted or their claims will be waived. Candidates submit claim and proof through "CANDIDATE DOCUMENTS".

Veteran/ Military- Maximum points allowed for this section shall be five (5) points. Applicants who served in the United States Military actively for at least one (1) year and who were honorably discharged or are now on inactive or reserve duty shall receive five (5) preference points. Proof of such service must include a copy of Military Form DD-214 (long form) as proof of active service, evidence of the honorable discharge, and a sworn affidavit by the applicant.
Education- Maximum points allowed for this section shall be five (5) points. Applicants who have successfully obtained an associate's degree in the field of fire service or emergency medical services or have obtained a bachelor's degree from an accredited college or university shall receive five (5) points. A copy of a diploma must be included as proof of the attainment of the degree.
Experience- Maximum points allowed for this section shall be five (5) points. Applicant who was employed full time as a certified OFSM firefighter- paramedic for at least two (2) years at another fire protection district or municipality shall be awarded one (1) point for each year. A copy of OSFM certification and a copy of paramedic license is required as proof.
- No experience preference points will be awarded to an applicant for service with a private employer who had a contract for fire and ambulance service with a fire protection district or municipality.
Residency- Maximum points allowed for this section shall be two (2) points. Applicants whose principal residence is currently located within the Marengo Fire-Rescue district shall receive two (2) preference points. Utility bills, driver's license, and/or signed residency lease is required for proof.
District Employees - Maximum points allowed for this section shall be five (5) points. Applicants who have served with the Marengo Fire-Rescue districts shall receive one (1) point for each full year of successful service to the district.

The Final Eligibility Register shall remain valid for two (2) years after which is will expire and the Board will strike off all remaining names. ((70 ILCS 705/16.07, 16.08 and 16.10; 65 ILCS 5/10-1.108 and 10-2.1-9)

Employment Disqualifiers:

Who is found lacking in any of the established bona fide occupational requirements for the position in the service for which the candidate applies;
Who is physically unable to perform the essential duties of the position to which the candidate seeks appointment;
Who uses intoxicating substances to the extent that performance may be diminished on the job, or who currently uses any nonprescription controlled substances or narcotics;
Who has been convicted of any felony or a misdemeanor involving moral turpitude pursuant to 70 ILCS 705/16.06b(i)
Who has attempted to practice any deception or fraud in completing the application or examination process;
Whose character and employment references are unsatisfactory;
Who fails to fully complete the application or fails to comply with the requirements of the application or examination process in any respect;
Who tests positive for the existence of THC, cocaine and related drugs, and other illegal, non-prescription narcotics and drugs, under a sound drug testing procedure;
Who has been dismissed from any public service for good cause; or
For any other lawful reason, including any other reason set forth in 65 ILCS 5/10-2.1. & 70 ILCS 705/16.06b(i)

Department Overview: Marengo Fire - Rescue is a progressive department located in Southwest McHenry County, Illinois. Marengo Fire- Rescue responds to approximately 2,000 combined fire and EMS incidents in 2024. Marengo Fire- Rescue has an administrative staff including a Fire Chief, 2 Assistant Chiefs, 3 Battalion Chiefs, 3 Captains, 3 Lieutenants, 17 Full- time Firefighter/ Paramedic and 23 Part time Firefighter/ EMT-B or Paramedic. Marengo Fire- Rescue has the second largest fire district in Illinois.

Area Information: We currently operate three stations and serve the citizens of Marengo, Union, and the townships of Coral, Riley and Seneca. Marengo Fire- Rescue encompasses a 106 square mile jurisdiction.
