2. Firefighter - Paramedic (EMT-P)	Start $39.710 – up to $46.249	• Training/Onboarding: 16-week new-hire recruit academy on a 4x10 dayshift schedule. • Post-Academy: Transferred to Emergency Response (Platoon) 48x96 schedule. • Pay Note: Initial compensation reflects non-platoon "In training" status; rates adjust upon platoon assignment. • Relocation: Relocation funding available upon request.
3. Journeyman Firefighter - Paramedic (EMT-P)	$40.315 – up to $46.847 (Platoon)	• Training/Onboarding: Accelerated onboarding and orientation to integrate directly with department operations. • Post-Academy: Integrated directly into the Emergency Response (Platoon) 48x96 schedule. • Relocation: Relocation funding available upon request.

⚠️ Critical Requirements for Journeyman Firefighter-Paramedic Candidates

To be considered for the Journeyman Firefighter - Paramedic classification, you must meet the following stringent criteria:

Experience: Minimum of five (5) years of continuous, uninterrupted experience as a career firefighter/paramedic with a professional, fire-based Advanced Life Support (ALS) organization. You must have practiced under your Paramedic licensure in 2026.
Credentialing: Zero prior disciplinary actions, suspensions, or restrictions from any accrediting local, state, or federal EMS medical control authority.
Primary Function: Candidates hired under this posting are expected to provide direct emergency medical care at the WA-DOH FF/EMT-P level as a primary, non-delegable job function throughout their employment tenure with HFD.

Post-Offer & Academy Certification Conditions

Medical Evaluation: Conditional offers are subject to passing an NFPA 1582 "Medical Evaluation of Firefighter Candidates" assessment with our Occupational Medical Provider.
Background Check: Successful screening of a comprehensive background investigation is required prior to hire.
State Certification: Candidates must successfully register and certify with the Washington State Department of Health (WA-EMT for EMTs, and WA-EMT-P for Paramedics) by the completion of the recruit academy. HFD training staff will assist with this process.
Document Submission: Successful candidates will be contacted via email to submit color Adobe PDF copies of all required credentials/training records to the HMIS HR Staffing department. Submission rules: Crucial seals and seal numbers must be fully legible. Black & white, blurry, or incomplete copies will be rejected.

Training & Career Development

🛡️ Recruit Academy

HFD operates a comprehensive 16-week new-hire Firefighter Academy hosted at the Department of Energy’s state-of-the-art HAMMER training facility. Recruits will receive IFSAC or ProBoard Firefighter II certification along with specialized instruction in tactical rescues and radiological hazards.

All candidates hired under this posting must successfully complete the initial recruit academy and one year of probation as a condition of employment. Candidates who do not successfully complete the initial academy or satisfy probation requirements will be released from employment. HFD does not defer or recycle candidates into future academy classes if they are unable to complete the initial academy.

📈 Apprenticeship Program

As a condition of employment, all hired candidates (unless previously completed) will be enrolled in the Washington State Firefighter Joint Apprenticeship and Training Committee (WSFF JATC) 6,000-hour apprenticeship program. Apprentices must obtain their Journeyman Firefighter certificate within the first three years of employment.

Prior Experience Credit: Upon academy graduation, recruits may petition the HFD Joint Apprenticeship Training Council board to apply previous professional training toward their Journeyman certificate.
Wage Progress: Each benchmark successfully completed in the apprenticeship program triggers a structured increase in hourly compensation.
