The City of DeKalb is currently recruiting for Entry Level Police Officers. To be eligible for this position, all candidates are required to complete all steps by Tuesday, January 7, 2025:
1. Frontline National Exam & NTN Application: Candidates must complete the Frontline National Exam AND fill out the NTN Application. The department also requires the candidate Personal History Questionnaire (PHQ) and the Public Safety Self-Assessment (PSSA). You can access the questionnaire through your candidate account. The PHQ must be completed by the closing date, or you may not be considered further in the process.

Department Information: The DeKalb Police Department consists of 75 sworn and 30 civilian personnel. The department consists of four divisions: Patrol, Administrative Services, Community Support Services, and Investigations. The Department is staffed with a Chief, a Deputy Chief, 4 Commanders, 12 Sergeants, 57 Police Officers, and 2 Contracted Social Workers that responded to 44,763 calls for service in 2023. The department has a lot to offer including bike patrol, motorcycle unit, K9, special operations group (SOT), drug and gang unit, school resource officers, domestic violence unit, community policing and CIT officers. The City of DeKalb is located 60 miles west of Chicago and 30 miles southeast of Rockford. We are the home of the second largest university in the State of Illinois – Northern Illinois University. Age: 21 years old and under the age of 35 unless exempt from such age limitation as provided in Section 5/10-2.1-6 of the Board of Fire and Police Commissioners Act. Proof of birthdate is required.

Hiring Process: The selection process includes application, written exam, oral interview, background investigation and polygraph exam. Psychological and medical exams are completed upon conditional offer of employment. Offers are conditioned upon the successful completion of the POWER test scheduled at the academy.
Felony, Criminal Activity Disqualifiers: No felony convictions and or crime involving moral turpitude as specified in Section 5/10-2.1-6 Part C of the Board of Fire and Police Commissioners Act.
Driving Disqualifiers: Must have a valid driver’s license and good driving record.
Residency Requirement: Residency Requirement within a period of fifteen (15) months from date of hire within boundaries established in the collective bargaining agreement. Please see the map in the recruitment packet.
