Salary Range: $78,747-$117,551* Subject to collective bargaining agreement increases. Benefits Information: Medical, dental, and vision insurance, life insurance, fire pension, deferred compensation plan with match, education bonus, clothing allowance, wellness reimbursement, longevity pay, and wellness bonus. Paid time off including vacation in lieu of holidays, vacation, sick leave, Kelly days, bereavement leave and compensatory time.

The Department has an ISO Rating of 2 with a primary response area of 16 square miles and serves an additional 55 square miles by contract to the DeKalb Fire Protection District. In 2024, the DeKalb Fire Department responded to 7,437 requests for emergency service of which 81% were medical calls. The Fire Department is comprised of 71 full-time sworn employees including a Fire Chief, 2 Deputy Chiefs and 2 civilian employees. An additional fire station opened in April 2025; we have immediate hires to fulfill staffing requirements.

Necessary Certification:
· State of Illinois (IDPH) Paramedic License (EMT-P) or currently enrolled in an accredited EMT-P training and certification program (completion within 3 months of application).
· Successful completion of the Candidate Physical Ability Test (CPAT) with Ladder Climb Certification conducted by a licensed agency within twelve (12) months prior to the conditional offer of employment.
Hiring Process: The selection process includes submission of an application, written exam, oral interview, background investigation, and polygraph exam. Psychological and medical exams are completed upon conditional offer of employment.
Criminal Activity Disqualifiers: No felony convictions and/ or crime involving moral turpitude as specified in Section 5/10-2.1-6 Part C of the Board of Fire and Police Commissioners Act.
Driving Disqualifiers: Must have a valid Driver’s License
Residency Requirement: 40-mile radius from the DeKalb Fire Department at 700 Pine Street, DeKalb, Illinois 60115 after 15 months of employment.
Age Requirement: At least 21 years of age, but less than 35 years of age prior to taking any test leading to employment as a Firefighter/Paramedic unless exempt under Section 5/10-2.1-6 of the Board of Fire and Police Commissioners Act.
