The Chesapeake Fire Department will conduct CPAT (Candidate Physical Ability Test) testing, at their CPAT testing facility, for all applicants once the application period closes. Applicants with a valid CPAT certificate (less than 180 days old) may submit a copy to the Chesapeake Fire Department prior to the scheduled CPAT test date.
Candidates who have filled out the City's application, successfully passed CPAT, and meet minimum requirements will receive notification from the City of Chesapeake to schedule testing.

Salary Information: $50,150 (Upon completion of the fire academy: minimum $54,000 DOQ)

Area Information: The City of Chesapeake was formed in 1963 through the consolidation of the City of South Norfolk and Norfolk County. The City is comprised of 353 square miles and is located in the southeastern portion of the Commonwealth of Virginia in the Hampton Roads region. Chesapeake is bordered to the north by the Cities of Norfolk and Portsmouth, to the east by the City of Virginia Beach, to the south by Currituck and Camden Counties in North Carolina, and to the west by the City of Suffolk.

Job Requirements
Age: 18
Citizenship Required: Candidates must be legally authorized to work in the United States.
High School Grad/GED: Requires high school diploma or GED and any combination of education and experience equivalent to satisfactory completion of one year of college education.
Ability to Read/Speak English: Yes
Vision: Candidate's vision must meet the requirements outlined in NFPA 1582 – Standard on Comprehensive Occupational Medical Program for Fire Departments.
Academy Certification: Candidates who successfully pass all phases of the selection process will be required to attend and complete the Hampton Roads Recruit Fire Academy.
Prior Experience: No, but preferential points are awarded for prior Fire and EMS training/experience depending on qualifications.
Necessary Certifications: Minimum certifications required upon graduation from the Hampton Roads Recruit Fire Academy:
· Virginia Department of Fire Programs Firefighter I & II
· CPR certification
· Virginia Office of Emergency Medical Services EMT-B, or EMT-P
· A valid driver's license and a driving record in compliance with City Driving Standards
Schooling Prior and Post Hiring: Candidates who successfully pass all phases of the selection process will be required to attend and complete the Hampton Roads Recruit Fire Academy. The Fire Chief has the discretion to waive the Trainee status for a candidate who has previously met minimum basic training standards for the position of Firefighter/EMT in the Commonwealth of Virginia, or any other state with whom there is reciprocity.
Hiring Process: The candidate selection process consists of six components and all candidates must have a valid CPAT certificate to advance in the selection process:
· Application
· Candidate Physical Ability Test (CPAT)
· FireTEAM Entrance Test (40% of candidate's total score)
· Panel Interview (60% of candidate's total score)
· Assessment of Credentials (Education and prior Fire/EMS experience in a career department)
· Optional Chief’s Interview

Drug Use Disqualifiers: A conviction of any crime involving controlled substances or synthetics, including unlawful possession or distribution or intent to distribute unlawfully Schedule I through V drugs as defined by the Virginia Drug Control Act (§ 54.1-3400 seq. of the Code of Virginia) unless at least five years have passed since the conviction or five years have passed since release from custodial confinement whichever occurs later.Use of Cocaine, LSD, PCP, or any type of hallucinogenic drug in the last five years or use of marijuana in the last three years, unless the candidate has successfully completed, or is currently participating in, a supervised drug rehabilitation program and is no longer engaging in the illegal use of drugs. The candidate may also demonstrate that he/she has been otherwise rehabilitated successfully and is no longer engaging in the illegal use of drugs.Employment Disqualifiers: Candidate's criminal history record must be in accordance with the City of Chesapeake Firefighter/Emergency Medical Technician (EMT) Entrance Selection Policy, and the City of Chesapeake Criminal History Record Check Policy:

ESTABLISHING THE FIRE ENTRANCE ELIGIBILITY LIST : Each Firefighter Trainee candidate who successfully completes all required phases of the Fire entrance selection process will be placed on the Fire entrance eligibility list for a period of 24 months.Ranking on the Fire entrance eligibility list shall be all-inclusive based upon the candidate’s combined scores of the components of the Fire entrance selection process.A candidate who successfully completes all phases of the Fire entrance selection process and provides appropriate documentation (DD-214) to the CFD validating his/her status as an honorably discharged U.S. veteran or certifying possession of a service-connected disability rating shall have two points added to his/her overall score for ranking on the Fire entrance eligibility list.
Post Conditional Offer Process: Once a conditional offer of employment has been extended, the candidate must pass a four-part post-conditional offer process.
1. Fitness for Duty Examination – In accordance with NFPA 1582
2. Drug and Alcohol Testing
3. Background Investigation
4. Polygraph Examination – At the discretion of the Fire Chief
