The City of Baltimore is building an eligibility list for Summer 2025. The entry-level testing is an important step in this process. Information on next steps will be available here when the process for the next Academy begins.
Classification: EMT Firefighter
An Emergency Medical Technician (EMT) Firefighter provides emergency medical treatment at the scene of an accident or illness, transports sick and injured persons to medical facilities, responds to and mitigates hazardous incidents, extinguishes fires, performs rescues, and participates in community risk reduction activities.
Work of this class may involve leading other Fire professionals but does not involve full supervisory duties or responsibilities. Employees in this class work rotating shifts including nights, weekends, and holidays. Work is performed on the scene of fires where there is frequent exposure to hazardous conditions such as burning buildings, smoke-filled rooms, collapsing structures, toxic fumes, and other hazards and hazardous conditions. Work is also performed on the scene of accidents, illnesses, disasters, HAZMAT incidents, other emergencies, and other emergency incidents; in an ambulance that is stationary and/or en route where there are multiple and varied, health concerns, conditions, and exposures to hazardous situations and stressful/traumatic events.
The work of this classification requires strenuous physical activity such as lifting, climbing steps, ladders; bending, squatting, and crawling; working in a less-than-ideal environment, at heights, and in confined obscure spaces. Work of this class requires wearing self-contained breathing apparatus.
Testing on NTN will be open continuously. Test results will be pulled by the Baltimore City Fire Department to be considered for the position. Please complete the Firefighter test through NTN and the department application located at [link].
Salary Information: Starting Salary $50,461.03 - $79,968.77 Annually
Job Requirements
Age: At least 18 years at time of application
Citizenship Required: Must be a U.S Citizen
High School Grad/GED: Have graduated from an accredited high school or equivalent acceptable to the State of Maryland.
Valid Driver's License: Have a valid Maryland Class C Non-commercial driver's license or an equivalent out-of-state driver's license acceptable to the Office of Risk Management is required. LEARNER PERMITS AND PROVISIONAL DRIVER'S LICENSES ARE NOT ACCEPTED.

SELECTION PROCESS:
The examination process includes a multiple-choice test, a physical ability test, and a structured interview. Candidates are required to make a converted score of not less than 70 on a scale of 100. The driver’s license of each candidate will be evaluated for appropriateness. It is essential, therefore, that you complete the application in its entirety by providing complete and accurate information on every section of the application. Vagueness or omission may eliminate you from consideration for this position.
The Physical Ability Test fee will be $30.00 for non-city residents.

NOTE 1 During the initial training period at the Fire Academy EMT Firefighters must obtain and maintain the following:
· Current Maryland State certification as an EMT – Basic
· Maryland Fire Service Professional Qualification Board Firefighter I and II certifications
· Maryland Fire Service Professional Qualification Board Responders to Hazardous Materials Operation certification
· Must successfully complete a Maryland Fire and Rescue Institute (MFRI) Emergency Vehicle Operator Course (EVOC), or an equivalent course acceptable to the Office of Risk Management and the Maryland Motor Vehicle Administration.
· American Heart Association's (AHA) CPR for the Healthcare Provider course
NOTE 2 Failure to pass any of the Baltimore City Training Academy Training Modules during the initial training period will result in termination of employment.NOTE 3 Failure to obtain any required license or certification by the end of the initial training period at the Fire Academy will result in termination of employment with the Baltimore City Fire Department.
NOTE 4 Members of the Baltimore City Fire Department must obtain and maintain licenses and certifications in all the above as a condition of employment. Members must successfully complete any additional educational courses and skills competency evaluations required by Maryland Institute for Emergency Medical Services Systems (MIEMSS), National Registry of Emergency Medical Technicians (NREMT), Maryland Fire and Rescue Institute (MFRI), and Baltimore City Fire Department (BCFD). In the event of changes in the standards, certification, or licensure requirements in any of the above, the member is required to maintain the equivalent certification or licensure to continue employment with the Baltimore City Fire Department.NOTE 5 Candidates for positions in this class hired after January 1, 2010, must meet National Fire Protection Association (NFPA) Standard 1582, including being tobacco free on duty, upon appointment, and throughout their length of service in the Baltimore City Fire Department or be subject to termination.NOTE 6 Candidates for positions in this class hired after January 1, 2016, are required to meet Baltimore City Fire Department physical performance standards as measured by periodic physical performance tests upon appointment and throughout their length of service in the Baltimore City Fire Department or be subject to termination.
VETERANS' PREFERENCE: Honorably discharged US Armed Forces veterans (with 90 days consecutive days active duty not including Reservists or National Guardsmen) who pass all parts of the examination are entitled to veterans' preference. Veterans must submit a DD 214 at the time of application. Late submissions will not be accepted.
RESIDENTS' PREFERENCE: Baltimore City residents submitting applications on or before the closing date who pass all parts of the examination are entitled to residents' preference. At the time of application, a legible photocopy of a valid Maryland Driver's License or Maryland Identification Card issued by the MVA with a street address within the Baltimore City limits must be submitted. Late submissions will not be accepted.
NOTE: Eligible candidates under final consideration for appointment will be required to authorize the release of criminal conviction information and submit to and pass a drug and alcohol test.
