This posting is for candidates who are not certified as Peace Officers in the State of Ohio but are interested in becoming an Akron Police Officer. Eligible candidates who are given a conditional offer of employment may have the opportunity to attend the City of Akron's STAR Training Academy. Attends a state certified Peace Officer Training Academy. Learns the requirements for becoming a Police Officer as established by the Ohio Peace Officer Training Commission and the City of Akron. Reviews and learns City policies, procedures, and related laws. Studies difficult and technical materials related to law enforcement. Learns to take and write reports. Receives instruction in basic, advanced, and technical subjects for the Ohio law enforcement community. Trains in a variety of areas including, but not limited to; de-escalation techniques, physical fitness, firearms, driving, subject control, patrol aspects, arrest, and detention procedures, building searches, stops and approaches, and first aid. Performs related work as required.
Graduation from an accredited high school or GED. Candidates must be within the age range 20.5 years through 45 years by May 30, 2025. Possession of a valid Ohio driver's license. Candidates must meet established physical standards under Ohio Law and maintain departmental physical standards. Candidates must become certified Ohio Peace Officers and will be automatically transferred to a Police Officer position effective the first day as a sworn officer. Cannot be prohibited by law from acquiring, having, carrying, or using firearms. Knowledge of the principles and processes for providing excellent customer service. Knowledge of English usage, including spelling, punctuation, and grammar. Ability to read, understand, and learn information such as laws, department policies, rules, and procedures. Ability to use personal computers and related software. Ability to prepare reports and accurately document information. Ability to understand and carry out oral and written instructions. Ability to satisfactorily complete the prescribed course of police training including OPOTC certification. Ability to achieve benchmark standards of the academy as required including, but not limited to; firearms, driving, physical fitness, and subject control. Ability to perform the essential functions of a Police Officer. Ability to exercise good judgment using common sense and analytic ability. Ability to remain alert and perceive details and changes in surroundings. Ability to effectively communicate both orally and in writing. Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with other employees and with individuals in the community. Ability to function as a member of a team. Ability to understand other people and own impact on interactions. Ability to develop rapport, reduce conflict, and show concern for the rights of others. Ability to be composed and rational in stressful situations. Ability to learn to handle emergency response, including pursuit on foot, use of restraint techniques, firearms use, and victim rescue. Ability to effectively respond to changing demands and environments. Ability to operate a motor vehicle safely and legally. List of essential job functions available upon request.
This is a classified position.The selection process will consist of the Ohio Peace Officer Training Commission (OPOTC) physical fitness test, the NTN written examination, and an extensive background investigation including a polygraph and other components. Applicants may be disqualified or may be terminated after appointment for providing false or incomplete information during any phase of the selection process. Final appointment is contingent upon the candidate passing a comprehensive medical examination and psychological evaluation after receiving a conditional offer of employment.
Candidates who pass the written examination may be eligible for bonus points. However, bonus points cannot exceed a total of 20 points added to the candidate's passing written examination grade. All bonus points awarded will be verified. To be considered for bonus points, all required documents MUST be submitted with your application. If documents are not received timely, no bonus points will be awarded.
