ABOUT THE DEPARTMENT
The Astoria Fire Department operates as a combination department, made up of both career personnel and volunteer firefighters. The team includes a Fire Chief, two Deputy Chiefs, and nine line staff members. Career firefighters work across three shifts following a Modified Detroit schedule. Each year, the department responds to approximately 1,900 calls, including fires, emergency medical incidents, hazardous materials responses, and motor vehicle accidents. EMS transport services are not provided by the department.
POSITION SUMMARY
The Astoria Fire Department has one vacancy which will be filled as a Firefighter or Driver/Engineer depending on the qualifications of the selected candidate.
Firefighters and Driver/Engineers are responsible for responding to emergency situations including fires, accidents, and natural disasters, with the primary goal of protecting life, property, and the environment. They perform fire suppression, rescue operations, hazardous material response, and emergency medical services as needed. Firefighters and Driver/Engineers also conduct routine equipment checks, maintain firefighting apparatus, clean and maintain fire department facilities and participate in ongoing training to remain prepared for a variety of emergency scenarios. Additionally, they engage in fire prevention efforts such as public education, building inspections, and safety drills. The role requires physical fitness, teamwork, quick decision-making, and a commitment to serving the community under high-stress conditions.
PAY
Firefighter $67,685 - 82,285 per year base pay, plus pay premiums
Driver/Engineer $71,160 - 86,490 per year base pay, plus pay premiums
