MUNICIPAL CIVIL SERVICE COMMISSION-LANCASTER, OHIO
Notice is hereby given that a competitive examination for the position of Firefighter/EMT will be given by The National Testing Network.
Firefighter/EMT: City of Lancaster Fire Department
SALARY: Firefighter/EMT Basic starting pay is $67,235.54
*Hiring preference will be given to candidates who are Paramedics with a Medic Card or are actively in Medic school.
** Lateral entry may increase salaries for qualified Firefighter/Paramedics, up to $93,552.27, depending on years of pensionable service.
QUALIFICATIONS: Applicants must be of good moral character, temperate habits, sound health and physically able to perform all duties of the position. Must be a graduate from an accredited senior high school or have a G.E.D. certificate of equivalency. Applicants must have a current Ohio Firefighter Level II certification as well as a current Ohio Basic EMT certification. Newly hired Firefighter/EMT Basic shall be required to obtain their State of Ohio Paramedic certification within 36 months of hire date.
Applicants must be able to read and write understandably in the English language; have the ability to make written reports; ability to pass such medical, physical and agility standards and tests as prescribed from time to time; ability to pass the physical examination prescribed by the commission. Applicants must reside in Fairfield County or a contiguous county after successful completion of a probationary period.
AGE: No person shall be eligible to take an examination for and receive an original appointment to a fire department as a firefighter subject to civil service laws of this state unless he or she has reached the age of 18. No person shall be eligible to receive an original appointment with the Lancaster Fire Department on or after his or her 36th birthday.
Lateral hires who are above the age of 36 and who were appointed as a fulltime firefighter elsewhere will qualify for employment with Lancaster so long as they meet this requirement.
The subject of the examination will be experience and practical questions. The term of the eligibility list generated from the results of the test is fixed at not less than one year.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS
· High school diploma or equivalent
· Ohio Firefighter Level 2 certification
· Ohio EMT certification
· Valid Driver’s License
· Applicants must reside in Fairfield County or 2 contiguous counties after successful completion of a probationary period
. Lateral hires who are above the age of 36 and who were appointed as full-time firefighters in the OP&F pension system elsewhere will qualify for employment with Lancaster so long as they meet this requirement.
EXTRA CREDIT: The following adjustments shall be made to the scores of applicants on the condition that they pass the entry level exam at 70% or higher.
1. Any person who has a current Ohio Paramedic certification will receive additional credit of 20%.
2. Any person who has completed service in the uniformed services, who has been honorably discharged from the uniformed services or transferred to the reserve with evidence of satisfactory service, and who is a resident of this state and any member of a reserve component of the armed forces of the United States, including the Ohio National Guard, who has completed more than one hundred eighty days of active duty service pursuant to an executive order of the president of the United States or an act of the congress of the United States may file with their application a certificate of service or honorable discharge, and, upon this filing, the person shall receive additional credit of 20%. A person who receives an additional credit under this section shall not receive an additional credit under (3) below.
3. A member in good standing of a reserve component of the armed forces of the United States, including the Ohio National Guard, who successfully completes the member’s initial entry-level training, shall receive an additional credit of 15%.
To receive the above credit, applicants must submit a copy of a certificate of honorable discharge or a copy of form DD214 at the time of application.
The total amount of credit that may be accumulated may not exceed 40%.
HOW TO APPLY
The City of Lancaster tests through an Online Examination through the National Testing Network, Inc. (NTN).
To schedule a test, visit NTN's website at www.nationaltestingnetwork.com . Under Find Jobs, select Firefighter Jobs and sign up for the City of Lancaster Firefighter Paramedic.
The testing window will be open between June 5, 2025 - July 5, 2025.
a) An examination fee of $65 is due to NTN at the time of registration. Applicants who have previously tested with NTN within the past 12 months may pay $15 to NTN to have their results sent to the City of Lancaster.
