Department Overview:

As a growing combination fire department, The Rutland Dundee Fire Protection District is proud to serve the communities of Sleepy Hollow, Gilberts & Unincorporated Rutland & Dundee Townships. Operating 2 stations with 2 ALS Engines and 3 ALS ambulances, 1 Tender & 1 Brush truck. Our stations are each staffed with a 3-person Jump company for 24 hours, 365 days a year. Academy Certification: Basic Operations Firefighter from the Illinois Office of the State Fire Marshal

Necessary Certifications: Basic Operations Firefighter from the Illinois Office of the State Fire Marshal
Paramedic EMT-P with the Illinois Department of Public Health or Enrolled in a Paramedic Program by Application deadline.

Additional Requirements: Provide Valid Candidate Physical Ability Test Card with Ladder climb at time of hire.

EMT-B candidates are eligible to take the examination provided they are officially enrolled in an accredited paramedic training program at the time of application. If hired, the candidate must obtain certification as a paramedic no later than the end of their probationary period.

Key Responsibilities:

Respond to fire alarms, non-emergency calls for service and emergency calls involving fires, hazardous materials, rescues, and EMS.
Operate fire apparatus, tools, and equipment safely and effectively,
Suppress fires using appropriate techniques and extinguishing agents.
Conduct search and rescue operations in burning or other dangerous environments.
Perform salvage and overhaul activities to prevent rekindling and minimize damage.
Perform fire prevention, education, and inspection programs.

Emergency Medical Services (EMS):

Provide basic life support (BLS) and advanced life support (ALS) care to patients in pre-hospital settings.
Assess patients and determine appropriate medical treatment based on protocols.
Administer medications, perform other related EMS activities as needed.
Transport patients to medical facilities while continuing medial treatment enroute.
Maintain accurate and thorough patient care records and reports.

Other Duties:

Maintain readiness of emergency vehicles, equipment, and gear.
Participate in ongoing training and continuing education to maintain certifications.
Assisting with community outreach and public safety education efforts.
Perform station duties including cleaning, maintenance, and equipment checks.
Collaborate with other public safety agencies during emergencies.

Work Environment:

Exposure to hazardous environments, extreme heat, smoke, chemicals, and bodily fluids.
Irregular hours include nights, weekends and holidays; 24-hour shifts.
Physically demanding; may require lifting heavy equipment and patients.

Preference Points:

Experience Preference Points. Any candidate who has been a part-time firefighter with the Rutland Townships Fire Protection District will be awarded one half point for each full year of service, up to maximum of five (5) points. Candidates from outside the Rutland-Dundee Townships Fire Protection District who are employed as full-time firefighters for at least two (2) years shall have the same preference as Rutland-Dundee Townships Fire Protection District part-time firefighters and shall be awarded one half point for each full year of service up a maximum of (5) points. Proof of such service may include submission of a letter from the department documenting service and must include an affidavit from the applicant. Note that proof of paid-on-call or full-time service may be verified by the district. Also note that an applicant may not receive experience preference points for a certificate if the number of points awarded for that certificate would place the applicant before a veteran of the district on the eligibility list.
Military Preference Points. Candidates who served in the United States Military for at least one year and who were honorably discharges or who are now on inactive, or reserve duty shall receive five (5) points. Proof of such service must include evidence of the honorable discharge and/or participation in active duty and an affidavit by the candidate.
