Specific Disqualifiers/Behaviors: Any felony conviction will disqualify a candidate.
Driving Disqualifiers: Alcohol and/or drug driving convictions do not automatically disqualify a candidate. However, it may be a factor when making a hiring decision. The weight that a prior conviction is given will depend on the circumstances and time since the conviction. Must be able to maintain insurability under those standards set by the City's liability insurance provider.
Drug Use Disqualifiers: Prior drug use does not automatically disqualify a candidate, but it will be a factor in any hiring decision. The weight it is given will depend on the circumstances. Current drug use will disqualify a candidate.
Hiring Process: Candidates must receive an average score of 70% in order to be placed on the eligibility list. The Civil Service Commission will certify the list to the appointing authority. The selection process usually begins with a detailed background check and the completion of a detailed application. Finalists may be interviewed by the appointing authority or a panel of the appointing authority's choosing, to include the Chief of Police. Once a conditional offer of employment is made, the applicant may be required to undergo both physical and mental health examinations, a credit check, and a polygraph or voice stress analyzer test or tests.
