Job Description: Firefighters are responsible for providing quality fire suppression, emergency medical, rescue, fire prevention, service calls and public education to the community and our guests. Duties include but are not limited to extinguishing fires under stressful and hazardous conditions. Additional duties include rescue of endangered victims from vehicles, water, buildings, and the environment (i.e. ice rescue). Job duties also include station maintenance, equipment maintenance, training, and other duties as appropriately assigned. Firefighters frequently perform their duties in stressful situations and hazardous conditions while being exposed to temperature extremes, dirty environments and noisy conditions under direct and limited supervision.

Salary Information: $63,000 - $65,000

The Hartsel Fire Protection District, located in the South Park Basin of central Colorado, offers convenient access to Denver (approximately 100 miles) and Colorado Springs (approximately 65 miles). The District is surrounded by National Forest, providing abundant outdoor recreation opportunities year-round, including skiing, snowboarding, hiking, biking, fishing, hunting, and access to three nearby reservoirs.

The Hartsel Fire Protection District provides fire protection and emergency response services across approximately 750 square miles of rural central Colorado. Serving a geographically expansive and operationally demanding jurisdiction, the District is committed to delivering professional and reliable emergency services to protect life, property, and critical infrastructure.

Due to the size and rural nature of the District, personnel must be comfortable operating with a high degree of independence, strong decision-making abilities, and a commitment to teamwork. Members routinely respond to incidents that involve extended response times, limited resources, and challenging terrain typical of rural fire protection environments.

Hiring Process:

Our hiring process consists of the following steps:

Ride-Along Requirement
All applicants are required to complete a ride-along with a Lieutenant prior to the interview process.
Phone Interview
Candidates who complete the ride-along will participate in an initial phone interview.
Panel Interview
Selected candidates will attend a panel interview consisting of the Assistant Chief, Lieutenants, and the Administrative Chief.
Chief’s Interview
Candidates advancing from the panel interview will participate in a final interview with the Chief.
JPR Skills Testing
Final candidates must successfully complete JPR skills testing.
