The Firefighter/Paramedic is responsible for providing fire suppression, rescue operations, advanced emergency medical services (Paramedic level), fire prevention/education, hazardous materials response, and other public-safety duties, in accordance with ACJFD mission: “to provide professional, efficient and timely fire, rescue, and EMS services … placing the safety of our citizens and personnel as our Number One priority.”This is a full-time, 24/48-hour position with a kelley day, requiring readiness to respond at any hour and maintain high levels of training, readiness, and community engagement. This position will include working holidays, nights and weekends depending on the shift. No employee will be able to work more than 48 hours straight without 8 hours off prior to their next shift, unless detailed to an emergency.
Respond to fire alarms, medical emergencies (ALS/BLS), rescue calls, hazardous material incidents, vehicle extrications, and other emergency incidents within the district.
Provide paramedic‐level patient assessment, treatment, and transport (as required) in accordance with local protocols.
Perform fire suppression tasks: hose lines, ladders, ventilation, salvage and overhaul.
Conduct rescue/support operations: vehicle extrication, water/ice rescue (if needed), technical rescue as assigned.
Participate in fire prevention, public education programs (smoke alarms, fire safety outreach) and inspections as required.
Maintain all equipment and apparatus in ready condition (checking pumps, SCBA, medical gear, tools, PPE, station housekeeping).
Stay current on training: fire ground operations, EMS updates, hazardous materials, rescue techniques. ACJFD places priority on ongoing training and education.
Participate in shift duties: station maintenance, apparatus checks, pre-plans, hydrant checks, public service calls.
Inventory and order supplies (Medical and Station).
Must be Fluent in both written and spoken English.
Able to maintain a good working knowledge of the geography of ACJFD.
Provide mutual aid support to neighboring jurisdictions when requested.
Comply with all department policies, safety guidelines, state/federal laws and certification requirements.
Minimum Required:
Valid Ohio driver’s license.
High school diploma or GED.
Paramedic certification (Ohio EMT-Paramedic) or ability to obtain/maintain such certification.
Firefighter II certification, minimum of Firefighter I certification (must enroll and obtain FFII within a year of employment.
Excellent physical fitness, ability to perform strenuous tasks (fire suppression, rescue, lifting, climbing, exposure to hazardous environments).
Good interpersonal skills: able to communicate clearly with team members, patients, public; with a professional demeanor.
Willingness to work a 24-hour shift schedule (or assigned shift rotation) and respond to emergencies at any time.
Strong commitment to community service, safety, and teamwork in a combination department (full-time + part-paid responders).
Pass a background check.
No felony convictions.
Preferred / Desired:
Prior full-time or volunteer fire service experience.
Experience working as a paramedic in EMS or fire service.
Additional certifications (Haz-Mat Ops, Rescue Technician, Fire Instructor, EMS Instructor).
Strong knowledge of rural/industrial fire operations (ACJFD covers a rural/industrial/residential area including the Ohio Turnpike and state highways)
NIMS 100, 200, and 700.
Valid AHA BLS, ACLS, PALS, and other advanced life support credentials.
Work is performed in dynamic, high-stress, emergency environments.
Exposure to fire, smoke, extreme temperatures, hazardous materials, confined spaces, heights, water/ice conditions.
Work schedule typically involves 24-hour shifts (e.g., 24-on/48-off or other rotation), including nights, weekends, holidays.
Must respond from station or on-call when required.
Physical demands: climbing ladders, dragging hoses, lifting patients, carrying equipment, operating vehicles/apparatus.
Must wear protective gear (turnout/bunker gear, SCBA, EMS equipment) and follow strict safety protocols.
