Police Cadet

Position Overview

The Police Cadet position is an entry‑level, non‑sworn role designed for individuals currently enrolled in an OPOTA‑certified Basic Police Academy or seeking sponsorship. Cadets receive hands‑on exposure to law‑enforcement operations while completing academy training and preparing for future appointment as a sworn Police Officer.

Cadets are expected to uphold the highest standards of professionalism, integrity, and community engagement while representing the Riverside Police Department.

Key Responsibilities

Academy Progress — Maintain full‑time enrollment and satisfactory academic, physical, and skills‑based performance in an OPOTA‑certified academy.
Policy Compliance — Follow all academy rules, departmental policies, and professional conduct standards.
Community Interaction — Represent the department positively during public events and interactions.
Physical Preparedness — Maintain physical fitness levels required for law‑enforcement training and future sworn service.
Law Knowledge — Demonstrate understanding of local, state, and federal laws relevant to police work.

Minimum Qualifications

OPOTA Enrollment — Must be currently enrolled in an OPOTA‑certified Basic Police Academy or seeking sponsorship.
Age Requirement — Must be at least 21 years old at the time of appointment as a sworn officer.
Education — High school diploma or GED required.
Driver’s License — Valid Ohio driver’s license with a satisfactory driving record.
Work Eligibility — Must be legally authorized to work in the United States.
Background – No felony convictions.
Screening — Must successfully pass a background investigation, polygraph, psychological, drug screening, and any additional assessments required by the department.

Preferred Qualifications

Communication Skills — Strong interpersonal and written communication abilities.
Community Service — Prior volunteer or community service experience.
Teamwork — Demonstrated ability to work collaboratively in structured environments.

Work Environment

Cadets may be assigned to administrative tasks, training events, community programs, and observational ride‑alongs when not attending academy classes. This role does not include sworn authority or enforcement duties.

Compensation & Advancement

This is a paid, entry‑level position. The cadet pay is $26.50 while attending the academy. Upon successful completion of OPOTA certification and all department hiring requirements, Cadets may be eligible for appointment as a Sworn Police Officer.
