Testing Process
The City of Rolling Meadows utilizes the National Testing Network (NTN) for entry-level Firefighter/Paramedic recruitment.
Interested applicants must:
· Complete the City of Rolling Meadows employment application at https://www.governmentjobs.com/careers/rm
· Complete the NTN FireTEAM examination.
· Complete the NTN video interview and personal history questionnaire.
· Submit all required supporting documentation.
Applicants who successfully complete the testing process and meet all minimum qualifications may be invited to participate in an oral interview with the Board of Fire and Police Commissioners.
Candidates who fail to complete all testing components or submit the required documentation will no longer be considered.
Required documentation includes:
· High school diploma or GED
· Proof of U.S. Citizenship or authorization to work in the United States
· Valid Driver’s License
· Valid CPAT and Ladder Climb certification
· EMT-Basic or National Registry Paramedic certification at the time of application and Illinois EMT-Paramedic licensure at the time of a conditional offer of employment
· Any additional documents required by the Board of Fire and Police Commission Rules & Regulations
Additional Application Requirements
· $65 non-refundable NTN exam fee
· At least 20 years of age as of the application deadline but at least 21 years of age at time of hire and less than 35 years of age at time of placement on final eligibility register, unless otherwise exempt by statute
Preference Points will be offered in the following categories:
· Veterans – 5 points for a minimum one-year active duty with honorable discharge.
· Education – Up to 5 points maximum – Candidate is entitled to only ONE of the following three point allotments:
o 1 point – Associate’s Degree (non-fire service related) from an accredited college or university.
o 3 points – Bachelor’s Degree or higher (non-fire service related) from an accredited college or university or Associate’s Degree in Fire Science, Fire Service Management, Fire Service Administration, Public Safety, Emergency Management, or BFPC approved related field from an accredited college or university.
o 5 points – Bachelor’s Degree or higher in Fire Science, Fire Service Management, Fire Service Administration, Public Safety, Emergency Management, or BFPC approved field from an accredited college or university.
· Paramedic – 3 points if the candidate is an IDPH licensed paramedic and 2 additional points if the candidate is a paramedic with full practice privileges in the Northwest Community EMS System as documented in a Letter of Good Standing from the system.
· Experience – 1 point for each year (up to 5 points) of full-time sworn/commissioned service with a regularly constituted fire department or fire protection district. (Third party contract paramedic or PM/FF time does not qualify)
Compensation & Benefits
· Starting Salary: $81,073 annually
· Salary Range: seven-step pay plan with a top salary of $128,978 annually

Schedule
Firefighter/Paramedics work a 24-hour shift schedule consisting of 24 hours on duty followed by 48 hours off duty. Employees receive 13 FLSA work reduction days annually and vacation benefits beginning after one year of service, increasing based on years of service.
Key Responsibilities
· Respond to fire alarms, medical emergencies, rescue incidents, hazardous conditions and other calls for service in accordance with department policies and procedures.
· Perform fire suppression, search and rescue, ventilation, salvage, overhaul and other emergency operations to protect life and property.
· Provide Advanced Life Support (ALS) patient care, including assessment, treatment, stabilization, medication administration and preparation for transport in accordance with approved medical protocols.
· Operate and maintain fire apparatus, emergency vehicles, pumps, rescue tools and specialized firefighting and EMS equipment.
· Participate in ongoing training, drills, continuing education and professional development.
· Assist with fire prevention activities, inspections, pre-incident planning, hazard identification and public safety initiatives.
· Complete accurate reports and documentation related to emergency incidents, patient care, inspections, training and daily activities.
· Operate within the department’s chain of command while adhering to all policies, procedures and safety standards.
Competencies
· Knowledge of modern fire suppression, rescue and emergency medical service principles and practices.
· Knowledge of firefighting apparatus, equipment, tools and their safe and effective operation.
· Working knowledge of fire behavior, building construction, fire prevention practices, EMS protocols, patient care techniques and medical equipment.
· Ability to remain calm, make sound decisions and perform effectively in high-risk, high-stress and time-sensitive emergency situations.
· Ability to work effectively within a structured chain of command while collaborating as a member of a professional team.
· Strong verbal and written communication skills with the ability to interact professionally with the public, patients, fellow personnel and partner agencies.
· Commitment to continuous training, professional development and maintaining required certifications.
· Ability to accurately complete reports and maintain records in a timely manner.
· Demonstrated reliability, professionalism, integrity and adherence to department policies, procedures and safety standards.
Minimum Qualifications
· Citizenship: Must be legally authorized to work in the United States
· Driver’s License: Must possess a valid driver’s license
· Age: 20 years of age as of the application deadline but at least 21 years of age at time of hire and less than 35 years of age at time of placement on final eligibility register, unless otherwise exempt by statute
· Education: High School Diploma or GED
· Candidate Physical Ability Test (CPAT): Valid CPAT and Ladder Climb at time of application and must also be valid at time of appointment (CPAT is valid for one year from successful completion date)
· IDPH EMT-Basic: Illinois Department of Public Health (IDPH) EMT Basic or National Registry Paramedic certification at time of application deadline and IDPH EMT- Paramedic licensure at time of conditional job offer
