Job Title: Volunteer Firefighter

Reports to: Volunteer Lieutenant

Department: Fire Operations

FLSA Status: Volunteer

Supervisory Responsibility: None

Position Summary:

To protect the lives, property, and the environment through activities associated with fire prevention, fire suppression, hazardous materials, and emergency response including medical incidents. The Volunteer All Hazards Firefighter participates in the training and maintenance activities necessary to attain the required certifications for the safe performance of the functions required.

Essential Functions:

The duties of this position may change based on the needs of the district and additional direction from the Fire Chief. Specific duties and responsibilities include, but are not limited to:

Respond to fire alarms, medical calls, vehicle accidents, hazardous material incidents, and other emergency situations.
Assist in fire suppression, search and rescue, and patient care under supervision.
Operate firefighting and rescue equipment including hoses, ladders, tools, and apparatus.
Participate in scheduled training sessions, drills, and certification programs.
Support fire prevention activities, public education events, and community outreach.
Maintain readiness by inspecting and cleaning equipment, gear, and fire station facilities.
Follow departmental policies, procedures, and safety protocols at all times.
Work as part of a team in high-pressure and potentially hazardous situations.
Maintain membership in good standing both quarterly and annually as defined by Operating Guidelines.
Assists in the completion and maintenance of records necessary for the proper reporting of all incidents.
Performs other duties as assigned

Required Education and Experience:

High school graduate or equivalent
Must be 21 years or older
Requires a valid Colorado Driver’s License or a Class C Driver’s License and the ability to operate a personal vehicle to respond to emergency locations.

Wildland Red Card Certification*
EMT Certification*
Arduous Pack Test

*Must be obtained within 1 year through the Evergreen Fire/Rescue Fire Academy

Job Specifications:

Must have knowledge of:

Knowledge of the district geography, street and road locations, nature and locations of hazardous premises, principle structures, and water supplies available with a thorough understanding of response areas, and the ability to utilize the mapping resources to ensure a rapid and safe response.
Demonstrates a working knowledge of current Medical Protocols, Procedures, and Practices.
Consistently demonstrate adherence and enforcement of reasonable safety precautions called for by the assignment.
Consistently demonstrate the ability to recognize strengths and limitations for personal and professional growth with the ability to recognize and accept constructive criticism.

Must have the ability to:

Ability to learn various firefighting, EMS, and special operations duties, evolutions, and methods within a reasonable training period.
Ability to meet and pass specific, established physical fitness requirements. Physical strength and agility shall be such that they can perform arduous tasks under strenuous and adverse conditions.
Ability to work under stressful conditions and adapt quickly to changing situations while using good judgement and maintaining composure and professionalism.
Ability to take command of an emergency situation.
Ability to solve practical problems and deal with situations with limited standardization and information.
Demonstrates sound judgment and remains calm and able to perform independently or as directed by a superior officer in accomplishing fireground tasks.
Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with other employees, agencies, and community members.
Ability to complete annual points as required to maintain the minimum standard for a Colorado Firefighter 1 Certification.

Working Conditions:

· Regularly works in outside weather conditions, including temperature extremes, during the day and night shifts.

· Exposure to loud noises, confined spaces, and hazards associated with fighting fires and rendering emergency medical assistance, including biohazards, smoke, noxious odors, fumes, chemicals, liquid chemicals, solvents, and oils.

· Occasionally works near moving mechanical parts in high, precarious places and is occasionally exposed to wet or humid conditions, fumes or airborne particles, toxic or caustic chemicals, risk of electrical shock, and vibration.

Ability to lift heavy objects, climb ladders, and work in confined spaces.
Stamina to perform physically demanding tasks for extended periods under adverse conditions.
Wear a variety of uniforms, vests, and equipment weighing up to 75 lbs.
Push and pull manually with an average force of 80 lbs.
Stand, sit, walk, talk, hear, stoop, kneel, crouch, or crawl for prolonged periods of time.
Climb through small openings and crawl or maneuver in confined spaces
Work in hazardous work areas and medical/trauma situations which may involve exposure to bodily fluids and hazardous materials
