Job Classification: Deputy Sheriff - Enforcement - Trainee & Certified

The Marion County Sheriff’s Office is building an ongoing eligibility list for current and future Deputy Sheriff positions in Enforcement.

The Marion County Sheriff’s Office is seeking both trainee and certified applicants to join our Enforcement team as a Deputy Sheriff. The Enforcement Division provides law enforcement services to a diverse population throughout Marion County, spanning nearly 1,200 square miles. Deputies work in a wide array of environments including urban and rural communities as well as the farming and frontier regions of Marion County depending upon their assignment. We take pride in our ability to provide progressive and cost-effective law enforcement services and believe every person at the Sheriff’s Office contributes to the successful delivery of critical public safety services. The ideal candidate will have excellent communication skills, be service-oriented, and be willing to work in a team environment. We are a qualifying employer for the Public Service Loan Forgiveness program.

$30.48 - $36.76 Trainee Pay Rate*
$34.99 - $44.81 Certified Pay Rate*
*Hourly rate negotiable

Recent (within the past twelve months) FrontLine test with National Testing Network (NTN); OR
Possess a four-year, post-secondary degree issued by an accredited, degree-granting college or university recognized by the Oregon Office of Degree Authorization under the provisions of ORS 348-604; OR
Successfully completed training resulting in the award of Basic Police certification from Oregon Department of Public Safety Standards and Training (DPSST).

Applicants must complete ONE of the following physical proficiencies:

Recent (within the past twelve months) Oregon Physical Abilities Test (ORPAT) completed time from an Oregon Law Enforcement organization or authorized testing agency (NTN); OR
Recent (within the past twelve months) Physical Abilities Test (PAT) completed time from a Military or Law Enforcement related source; OR
Successfully completed training resulting in the award of Basic Police certification from Oregon Department of Public Safety Standards and Training (DPSST).

Typical Duties:
Duties may include, but are not limited to the following:

Patrols roads, highways, forestland, federal enclaves, and business areas in the enforcement of traffic and criminal laws; patrols rivers and lakes in patrol boat enforcing water safety laws and regulations.
Conducts criminal and traffic investigations and interviews; gathers evidence and takes statements of involved parties.
Prepares reports and maintains records necessary for efficient investigations, crime prevention, prosecution, and office procedures. Collects and secures evidence.
Operates radar equipment in the enforcement of speed regulations.
Makes arrests, books prisoners, transports prisoners and patients under custody to institutions, courts, and on extradition. Transports arrested, sentenced or detained individuals requiring movement to and from the County jail, juvenile facility, state institutions, municipal jails, and other facilities.
Serves subpoenas, warrants of arrest, and civil papers.
Promotes public relations in a highly visible role by participating in community events/public forums, informing the public on public safety concerns, and answering inquiries regarding laws and ordinances.
Receives complaints from the community, self-dispatches mobile units, and answers general inquiries of the public.
Performs court security when necessary.
Participates in search and rescue operations.
Performs other related duties as assigned.

Requirements:
Minimum requirements for both levels: Must meet the following State Department of Public Safety Standards and Training requirements:

United States Citizen within one year of employment
At least 21 years of age at the time of employment
Declared by a physician as able to perform the physical duties required by the occupation
Of good moral fitness, without legal conduct involving moral turpitude, dishonesty, fraud, deceit, misrepresentation, and conviction of drug and/or sex crimes.

Must meet the following Marion County requirements:

High school diploma or equivalent
Must possess a current driver's license in the applicant's state of residence and an acceptable driving history. Marion County will obtain a copy of the driving record for all qualified applicants from Driver and Motor Vehicle Services and review the driving record according to the Marion County policy and procedure for Driving on County Business. Selected applicants will be required to complete pre-employment questionnaires as part of the screening process.
Possess knowledge of and experience using a computer keyboard and PC equipment.
Possess the ability to work rotating shifts, split shifts or other alternative work schedules.
Final candidates will be subject to a personal background investigation including, but not limited to, employment, criminal and driving histories.
Final candidates selected for this position will be required to participate in a panel interview, a psychological test, and medical examination.
This is a safety sensitive/special needs position. Final candidates selected for this position will be required to pass a pre-employment drug screen, including testing for marijuana. Additional Requirements:
For Certified Level:

Eighteen (18) months experience as a Police Officer or Deputy, OR any equivalent acceptable combination of education and Police Officer experience.
Possess a Basic Police certification from the Department of Public Safety, Standards and Training, and/or any equivalent out-of-state law enforcement accreditation recognized by DPSST; OR
Applicants who are certified in another state:
- Must attend and pass DPSST Career Officer Development Course, within 12 months of hire date.
- Successful out-of-state applicants are at the Deputy Sheriff Trainee level and wage range until Oregon certification is achieved.

Background Check:
Finalists for this position will be subject to an extensive background investigation. Some issues that might cause an applicant to be withheld from further consideration include, but are not limited to the following:

A FELONY conviction under state or federal law, or MISDEMEANOR conviction relating to domestic violence; sex crimes; crimes against persons; unlawful use, manufacture, sale or possession of a controlled substance; weapons offenses; menacing; or any other crime that would preclude applicant from obtaining or maintaining DPSST certification.
Any false, fraudulent or misleading statement provided during the application or hiring process, whether made by the applicant or by others at the applicant’s request, may result in rejection of application, denial of employment, or dismissal from county service. Some instances may also result in prosecution for a crime.
Any military discharge with a characterization other than honorable may require additional documentation. Marion County may request written authorization to request official military records from the appropriate branch of service to make a determination regarding fitness for employment.

Operates a motor vehicle in the performance of duties; maintains a current Oregon driver’s license and an acceptable driving record; sees close and distant objects within normal parameters and uses peripheral vision; sees at night and under dark or low light settings; demonstrates sufficient depth perception; differentiates between colors; uses olfactory senses; hears within normal range; speaks clearly; uses a loud voice to shout; sits, walks, stands and moves around in the work area for extended periods of time; climbs stairs and/or inclines repeatedly; bends, stoops, crawls and kneels; kicks doors open; engages in repetitive motion of feet and legs for extended periods of time (bike patrol); lifts and carries up to 50 lbs; pulls and pushes up to 100 lbs; pushes doors open using shoulder; reaches for and lifts 10 lb objects; turns neck and twists body 90º in either direction; uses chemical agents to quell disturbances/ riots; works in a wide range of indoor and outdoor temperature conditions; writes legibly; grasps, handles and manipulates objects with hands; implements finger dexterity to manipulate objects; holds, aims and discharges firearms with sufficient accuracy to maintain minimum department qualifications; works flexible hours during the day and week; works day, afternoon, evening and night shift; meets the Department of Public Safety Standards and Training (DPSST); and successfully completes all phases of the Oregon Physical Ability Test at hire.
