Job Classification: Deputy Sheriff (Criminal Patrol) - Entry Level and Lateral Candidates

The Linn County Sheriff's Office is recruiting and building an on-going list for Deputy Sheriff (Criminal Patrol) - Entry Level candidates for current and future positions. The Sheriff's Office may close this recruitment at any time, without further notice.

If you are a Lateral applicant, please make note of your previous experience in your application and answer the Lateral Applicant question on the NEOGOV application accordingly. Salary compensation will be based on current experience level and pay. Testing (Frontline test and ORPAT) through the National Testing Network is NOT required for Lateral applicants at this time.

All Entry Level candidates must complete the Frontline and ORPAT tests for this position. For the Frontline test, applicants must pass all sections of the testing. Additionally, a passing score of 65% or higher on the video exam is required. The ORPAT is scheduled separately and you must pass the ORPAT with a time at or below 5:30. Applicants residing in Oregon may take the ORPAT with the National Testing Network. If you have proof of a passing ORPAT dated within one year of your application date, you may attach verification to your NEOGOV application or email it directly to Kelsey Morrison at kmorrison@linnsheriff.org. It must either come directly to Linn County from the agency or be on agency letterhead with agency contact information.

If you are an out-of-state applicant, your application may be accepted without an ORPAT score. However, an ORPAT score with NTN is required before a final offer of employment is given.

Salary Information: From $5,155 up to $6,491 per month (base salary)

Benefit Information:

Potential of additional pay (on top of base salary) for education, bi-lingual, special assignments, certification and longevity:

Education - up to 4%
Bi-Lingual - 5% Employees who are fluent in Spanish (and possibly Russian and/or American Sign Language) and use these skills while on duty will receive an additional 5% per month after passing a Standardized Language Fluency test administered by Linn County. Bilingual Pay is awarded at the discretion of the Sheriff.
Field Training Officer - 4%
K9 Deputy - 5%
Certification - up to 9%
Longevity - up to 7.5%

Linn County Sheriff's Office Deputies are enrolled in a retirement plan through the Oregon Public Employees Retirement System (OPERS), with county-pickup, along with 3% county-pickup deferred compensation plan
Shift overtime is paid at 1.5 times the regular rate of pay (can be re-directed to employee's deferred compensation plan too).
All uniforms (including dry cleaning) and equipment provided. Yearly equipment allowance of $150.
Paid vacation, personal and sick time
Ability to accrue up to 60 hours in Comp Time
On-site fitness facility available 24/7
1% County contribution into HRA/VEBA account (Health Reimbursement Arrangement)

Job Requirements

Age: 21 (at time of employment)

US Citizen: Lawfully work within the US

High School Grad/GED: Yes

Valid OREGON State Driver's License: Yes

Ability to Read/Speak English: Yes

Vision: Department of Public Safety Standards and Training requirement of 20/30 corrected.

Necessary Certifications: Be able to be certified as a police officer by the Department of Public Safety Standards and Training. DPSST Minimum Standards of Employment as a Law Enforcement Officer are located at www.oregon.gov/DPSST (Administrative Rule ).

Minimum requirements for Entry Level Candidates per Department of Public Safety Standards and Training:

· United States Citizen within one year of employment

· At least 21 years of age at the time of employment

· Declared by a physician as able to perform the physical duties required by the occupation

· Of good moral fitness, without legal conduct involving moral turpitude, dishonesty, fraud, deceit, misrepresentation, and conviction of drug and/or sex crimes.

· Must successfully complete all required training standards established by the Linn County Sheriff’s Office and/or DPSST within 18 months of hire.

Linn County requirements:

· Must possess a current driver’s license in the applicant’s state of residence and an acceptable driving history. Linn County will obtain a copy of the driving record for all qualified applicants from Driver and Motor Vehicle Services.

· Possess knowledge of and experience in using a keyboard, mouse and computer (PC) equipment.

· Positions in this class are required to work rotating shifts, split shifts or other alternative work schedules and may be subject to call back.

· Finalists must pass psychological exam and medical/drug evaluations by a county appointed physician.

Background Check: Finalists for this position will be subject to an extensive background investigation. Some issues that might cause an applicant to be withheld from further consideration include, but are not limited to the following:

· Felony convictions

· Misdemeanor convictions for:

· Domestic violence (DV)

· Currently named as the Respondent in a Restraining Order

· Crime of dishonesty; and/or

· Crime that resulted in serious physical injury to another.

· Illegal manufacture, transport, or sale of a controlled substance.

· Any repeated convictions of an offense, which indicate disrespect for the law, a lack of good moral character or disposition towards violence and disorder.

· Discharge from employment, where such discharge indicates poor behavior and/or an inability adjusting to discipline.

· Any military discharge with a characterization other than honorable may require additional documentation. Linn County may request written authorization to request official military records from the appropriate branch of service to make a determination regarding fitness for employment.

· Persons convicted of a petty larceny.

· Other disqualifiers:

· Driving Record - Must be a competent and licensed operator of vehicles in the State of Oregon.

· Drug Use - No arrests or convictions for any felony or any misdemeanor crimes involving the unlawful use, possession, delivery, or manufacturing of a controlled substance, narcotic or dangerous drug.

Additional Disqualifiers: Must pass a thorough background investigation, psychological exam, medical exam including drug screen, and integrity interview that establishes strong moral character. Any conduct that could compromise the integrity of the employee, other employees, the Sheriff’s Office or the County will be closely evaluated. Failure to read and follow directions may also disqualify candidates. The individual shall not pose a direct threat to the health or safety of the individual or others in the workplace.

Tentative Hiring Process:

· Review of NTN testing scores (FrontLine National & ORPAT). Applicants must achieve a passing score of 65% or higher on the video exam. Applicants must pass all sections of the testing.

· Review of NEOGOV Application

· Informal 10-15 minute face-to-face interview for eligible and invited applicants (followed by a short job tour).

· Formal oral board face-to-face interview for eligible and invited applicants.

· Conditional offer of employment extended to selected top candidates only.

· Pre-employment background investigation

· Hire contingent upon the successful completion of the following screening processes:

· Pre-employment medical evaluation and drug screening

· Pre-employment psychological evaluation
