Job Classification: Corrections Deputy - Entry Level

The Linn County Sheriff's Office is currently recruiting for Corrections Deputy - Entry Level candidates. The Sheriff’s Office is building an ongoing eligibility list for current and future positions. This recruitment may close at any time, without further notice.

If you are a Lateral applicant, testing (REACT test and ORPAT) through the National Testing Network is NOT required for Lateral applicants at this time.

All entry level candidates must complete the REACT and ORPAT tests for this position. For the REACT test, applicants must pass all sections of the testing. Additionally, a passing score of 80% or higher on the video exam is required. The ORPAT is scheduled separately, and you must pass the ORPAT with a time at or below 5:30. Applicants residing in Oregon may take the ORPAT with the National Testing Network. If you have proof of a passing ORPAT dated within one year of your application date, you may attach verification to your NEOGOV application or email it directly to training@linnsheriff.org. It must either come directly to Linn County from the agency or be on agency letterhead with agency contact information.

If you are an out-of-state applicant, your application may be accepted without an ORPAT score. However, an ORPAT score with NTN is required before a final offer of employment is given.

Salary Information: From $5,309 up to $6,685 per month (base salary)

Benefit Information:

Potential of additional pay (on top of base salary) for education, bi-lingual, special assignments, certification and longevity:
- Education - up to 4%
- Bi-Lingual - 5% Employees who are fluent in Spanish (and possibly Russian and/or American Sign Language) and use these skills while on duty will receive an additional 5% per month after passing a Standardized Language Fluency test administered by Linn County. Bilingual Pay is awarded at the discretion of the Sheriff.
- Field Training Officer - 4%
- Certification - up to 9%
- Longevity - up to 7.5%
Linn County Sheriff's Office Deputies are enrolled in a retirement plan through the Oregon Public Employees Retirement System (OPERS), with county-pickup, along with 3% county-pickup deferred compensation plan
Shift overtime is paid at 1.5 times the regular rate of pay (can be re-directed to employee's deferred compensation plan too).
All uniforms (including dry cleaning) and equipment provided. Yearly equipment allowance of $150.
Paid vacation, personal and sick time
Ability to accrue up to 60 hours in Comp Time
On-site fitness facility available 24/7
Health & Fitness Incentive - up to 24 hours of additional paid time off per year
2% County contribution into HRA/VEBA account (Health Reimbursement Arrangement)

Hiring Process Details

Background Check: Finalists for this position will be subject to an extensive background investigation. Some issues that might cause an applicant to be withheld from further consideration include, but are not limited to the following:

Felony convictions
Misdemeanor convictions for:
- Domestic violence (DV);
- Currently named as the Respondent in a Restraining Order;
- Crime of dishonesty; and/or,
- Crime that resulted in serious physical injury to another.
Illegal manufacture, transport, or sale of a controlled substance.
Any repeated convictions of an offense, which indicate disrespect for the law, a lack of good moral character or disposition towards violence and disorder.
Discharge from employment, where such discharge indicates poor behavior and/or an inability adjusting to discipline.
A Dishonorable Discharge from the armed forces.
Persons convicted of a petty larceny.

Drug Use Disqualifiers: No arrests or convictions for any felony or any misdemeanor crimes involving the unlawful use, possession, delivery, or manufacturing of a controlled substance, narcotic or dangerous drug. Must not use marijuana, or "natural medicines" as defined in Colorado Revised Statute 12-170-103. A history of excessive use of illegal drugs, or other offenses, could disqualify an applicant.

Additional Information: Must be able to read, write and speak English. Must pass a thorough background investigation, psychological exam, drug screen, and integrity interview that establishes strong moral character. Any conduct that could compromise the integrity of the employee, other employees, the Sheriff's Office or the County will be closely evaluated. The individual shall not pose a direct threat to the health or safety of the individual or others in the workplace. Must meet the following Department of Public Safety Standards and Training (DPSST) requirements:

United States Citizen within one year of employment
At least 21 years of age at the time of employment
Declared by a physician as able to perform the physical duties required by the occupation
Of good moral fitness, without legal conduct involving moral turpitude, dishonesty, fraud, deceit, misrepresentation, and conviction of drug and/or sex crimes.
Must successfully complete all required training standards established by the Linn County Sheriff's Office and/or DPSST within one date of hire.

Tentative Hiring Process:

Review of NTN testing scores (REACT & ORPAT). Applicants must achieve a passing score of 80% or higher on the video exam. Applicants must pass all sections of the testing. ORPAT time must be 5:30 or less. This step is only for entry level applicants; lateral applicants are not required to complete the testing.

Captain's Interview - Informal 10-15 minute face-to-face interview for eligible and invited applicants (possibly followed by a short job tour).
Oral Board Interview - Formal oral board face-to-face interview for eligible and invited applicants.
Conditional offer of employment extended to selected top candidates only.
