Firefighter/Paramedic
Firefighter/ Paramedic general job functions include responding to and resolving emergency and non-emergency fire, rescue, medical, hazardous materials and related incidents.
· Responds to and resolves emergency and non-emergency fire, rescue, emergency medical, hazardous material and other related incidents.
· Directs fire streams and other extinguishing agents and processes in a variety of emergency and non-emergency situations, occurrences and occupancies including structures, facilities, vehicles, agricultural settings, accident scenes, spills and other related incidents.
· Rescues and extricates victims from hazardous environments or entrapment from structures, vehicles, trains, monorails, aircraft, watercraft and other locations.
· Assesses nature and extent of illness or injury to establish and prioritize medical procedures to be followed. Maintains knowledge and proficiency in medical protocols as set forth by the Medical Director.
· Provides basic and advanced life support medical treatment as required. Monitors and records patient's vital signs and information.
· Completes reports and other required documents.
· Communicates with on-line medical direction via radio and/or telephone.
· Provides a variety of non-emergency public relations, public services and assistance as required.
· Determines and applies rescue and emergency medical care, techniques and practices to provide immediate medical aid to the ill and injured.
· Provides and attends classroom and practical emergency services training and education.
· Works as a team member and/or individually in carrying out a variety of assignments in emergency services situations.
· Maintains knowledge of Department rules, regulations, policies, procedures and the labor contract. Maintains issued clothing and equipment.
· Conducts public education programs as assigned.
· Others duties may be assigned.
Qualifications:
To perform this job successfully, an individual must be able to perform each essential duty satisfactorily. The requirements listed below are representative of the knowledge, skill, and/or ability required.
Education and/or Experience:
Must be a high school graduate or possess a GED acceptable to the District. An Associate’s Degree from an accredited college or university is highly desirable.
Language Skills:
To perform this job successfully, an individual must possess excellent written and oral communications skills. Multilingual skills are desirable.
Mathematical Skills:
To perform this job successfully, an individual must possess a basic knowledge of mathematical concepts and calculations.
Reasoning Ability:
To perform this job successfully, an individual must possess an ability to think and reason critically. Must have the ability to define problems, collect data, establish facts and draw valid conclusions.
Certificates, Licenses, Registrations:
Maintain current State of Florida Paramedic License, Fire Fighting Minimum Standards, Maintain AHA ACLS
and BLS Certifications. Obtain and maintain endorsement by the department’s Medical Director. Must
possess a valid Florida Driver License and maintain insurability under the District's commercial vehicle
coverage.
Physical Demands:
The physical demands described here are representative of those that must be met by an employee to successfully perform the essential functions of this job. Most essential functions require muscular strength and endurance, aerobic capacity, flexibility and equilibrium. Paramedics shall maintain sufficient physical ability to perform essential functions.
Work Environment:
The work environment characteristics described here are representative of those an employee encounters while performing the essential functions of this job. The Firefighter Paramedic, at times, must be exposed to high hazard situations while performing at emergency scenes. Extreme weather conditions are also encountered during the performance of their duties, and exposure to contagious diseases does occur. Work involves the application of numerous emergency medical and life saving skills and instruction techniques. Work environment may involve stressful conditions having a direct effect on life safety.
The starting hourly rate for this position is $26.44/hr, or $66,000.00/yr.
