Testing Requirements:

Ongoing testing is offered with the National Testing Network even when the City of Marion is not accepting applications. When applications are being accepted, applicants must test through the National Testing Network AND submit an application to the Human Resource office for the City of Marion prior to the deadline as established by the Civil Service Commission.

Salary Information:
(OPOTA Certified) Start at $53,331.20 per year. Under current contract, salary after 5 years is $68,556.80.

Benefit Information:

Applicants with previous law enforcement experience may be eligible for a higher starting wage and vacation accumulation based on prior years of experience.
Shift differential for 2nd and 3rd shifts
Holiday pay on designated Holidays
Holiday time: 96 hours/year with 3 years of accumulation
Vacation time:
- 0-5 years 80 hours
- 6-11 years 120 hours
- 12-18 years 160 hours
- 19-24 years 200 hours
- 25-over 240 hours
Unlimited vacation accumulation
Over 100 hours of sick leave accumulation with the possibility to sell back unused sick time at the end of each year
Up to 480 hours of compensatory time accumulation
Longevity every five years, starting at $.20/hour at five years and ending with $.90/hour with 30 years.

Department Overview: The department handles 40,000 calls for service annually and is the police primary resource for citizen contact regarding emergency and non-emergency law enforcement needs. The department provides around-the-clock service and is made up of patrol, administrative, detective, records, and other support personnel.

Area Information: The City of Marion is the seat of Marion County and is located about 50 miles north of downtown Columbus, Ohio's state capitol. Marion offers many different amenities, including newer schools, many parks, and a very nice Aquatic Center.

Age: 21 years of age but cannot have reached the age of 35.

Valid OHIO State Driver's License: Yes

Ability to Read/Speak English: Yes

College: Not required, but extra credit given by the Civil Service Commission for 2 or 4 year degree.

Academy Certification: Not required, but extra may be credit given for OPOTA certification.

Prior Experience: Not required.

Necessary Certifications: OPOTA certification preferred, but not required. If not OPOTA certified, the candidate is required to become OPOTA certified. This can be completed, at the City’s expense, once hired.

Specific Disqualifiers/Behaviors: Felony, Criminal Activity Disqualifiers: Applicants may be disqualified from consideration or refused admittance to this examination, and may be disqualified or removed from an eligible list, or a certified list, for, but not limited to:

Inability to establish minimum requirements or qualifications.
For failure to pass any of the tests required for the position.
For conviction of or admission to any crime classified as a felony under Ohio Revised Code or any other applicable state code.
For conviction of a crime involving moral turpitude or an offense of violence.
For deception or fraud on application or examination.
For making false statements of material fact in the application, testing process or during any part of the hiring process and for use, threatened use or attempt in using political influence in securing employment.

Residency: Must establish and maintain a primary residence within Marion County or a surrounding County once hired.

Driving Disqualifiers: Applicants will be subject to disqualification for conviction or deferred judgment of an OVI offense within the 36 months prior to the date of application.

Drug Use Disqualifiers: Individuals who have done any of the following are not considered eligible for employment with the City of Marion Police Department:

At any time, illegally sold, delivered, distributed, or manufactured drugs;
Used any other illegal drug within the previous 36 months;
Used any prescription drug or a legally obtained substance in a manner for which it was not intended within the previous 36 months; or,
Used a prescription drug in its original intended manner but without the proper prescription or legal justification in the previous 12 months.

Employment Disqualifiers: Applicants must meet all minimum qualifications.

Additional Disqualifiers: Inability to pass any portion of the defined testing process shall be grounds for disqualification.

Police Officer Recruitment Process: The City of Marion Police Officer Recruitment Process includes the following components:

Entrance Exam - Completion of National Testing Network (NTN) exam with a minimum passing video score of 70%. Testing is routinely and continuously offered and scores will be accepted even when the City of Marion is not actively recruiting police officers to fill vacancies. All applicants MUST complete the candidate PHQ as part of the NTN application process. The PHQ should be completed and submitted by the closing date or you may not be considered further in the hiring process.
Vacancy Announcement and Application - When the City of Marion announces active recruitment, interested applicants will be given a deadline by which to submit for testing through the NTN and complete the application. Several documents are required at the time the application is submitted to the Human Resource Office. When actively accepting applications, the job posting will offer more details.
Physical Agility Assessment - The Physical Agility portion will be conducted after the written exam deadline. When actively accepting applications, the job posting will offer more details.
Ranking – A candidate's overall ranking will be comprised of their written exam plus extra credit for education, military status and certified police officer status.
Certification – Eligible candidates will be placed on an eligible-to-hire list to be approved and certified by the City’s Civil Service Commission which includes extra credit due.
Interviews – Candidates will be interviewed by a panel of 4-5 professionals from within the police department. The number of interviews is set by the City's Civil Service Commission based on the number of current vacancies.
Post-Interview Steps – Completion of an in-depth background assessment will be completed for anyone that the department would like to move forward within the process.
Issuance of Conditional Offer of Employment– A conditional appointment may be made on based on the condition that candidate successfully passes a psychological evaluation, medical examination, and drug test.
Psychological Examination – All candidates who receive a conditional offer of employment will be required to take a psychological examination.
Physical and Drug/Alcohol Screen – A licensed physician will conduct a complete medical examination to determine fitness to perform the essential job functions.
