Job Classification: Firefighter
The City of Sandusky is creating an ongoing list for current and future vacancies. Testing period will remain open. To be considered on this eligibility list, candidates are required to complete a test through the National Testing Network (NTN); www.nationaltestingnetwork.com. Candidates who attain a passing score or higher in all four (4) categories Human Relations – 60%; Mechanical – 50%; Reading – 80%; Math – 60% on the entry level exam will be placed on the department’s preliminary eligibility list. Minimum age for candidates to take the NTN test is 17 years of age. Test scores are valid for two (2) years, candidates will remain on our original appointment list for a period of two (2) years. The City of Sandusky does NOT require a Physical Abilities Test (PAT) through NTN. PAT testing will be conducted by the City of Sandusky Fire Department after the completion of the NTN examination.

Phase IV: Pass Physical Agility Test
Phase V: (If offered a position) Background check, physical and psychological exam
Salary Information: Salary is based upon negotiations with the International Association of Firefighters Local 327. Ranges through December 31, 2026, are as follows:
Min: Non-Certified Annual: $50,156 - $52,664
FF or Paramedic Certified: $52,423 - $55,044
FF & Paramedic Certified: $62,792 - $65,931
Automatic after 2 years: $75,403 - $79,173
Max: Lieutenant: $85,205 - $89,466 Captain: $96,282 - $101,096

Job Requirements
Age: Must be 18 years of age and less than 41 years of age at appointment (Per ORC 124.42). Candidates must be 17 years of age to take the National Testing Network examination.

Academy Certification: Not required at time of hire. However, candidate must enroll and successfully complete the Fire Academy within probationary period.
Performance Responsibilities: Under general supervision, must perform various duties to protect and serve the general public. City firefighters will work under the direction of supervisors assigned to a specific firehouse in the control and extinguishment of fires and the protection of life and property. Will obey the laws set forth by the Constitution of the United States, the State of Ohio, and the Charter of the City of Sandusky and perform related duties as assigned.
Minimum Physical Fitness Standards: Candidate must pass the minimum standards as detailed below:
SANDUSKY FIRE DEPARTMENT PHYSICAL AGILITY TESTING:
The tasks to be performed are listed in order:
1. Stair Climb with High Rise Pack
Carry a high-rise pack (2 – 50 ft. sections of 1 ½” hose weighing approx. 38 lbs.) from the first floor to the second floor, back down to first and up to the second. Deposit hose load in a square marked on the second floor. Multiple steps may be taken while ascending. Every stair must be touched coming down, and handrail must be used.
2. Hose Hoist
From the top of the hose tower, using a hand over hand motion the candidate will pull a rope to hoist a roll of 2 ½” hose (approx. 45 lbs.). The task is complete when the roll of hose clears the rail and is dropped in the square marked on the floor. Proceed down the stairs, touching each one, while using the handrail. A penalty will be assessed for skipping steps coming down. (5 sec. per infraction).
3. Forcible Entry
Using an 8lb. sledgehammer and large truck tire, the candidate will strike a large truck tire with the 8lb. sledgehammer. The event is complete when the candidate strikes the tire 10 times.
4. Hose Advance
After walking 140 ft., the candidate will pick up a nozzle and move a 1 ¾” charged hose line 75 ft., crack (open) nozzle and show water, after they pass the 75 ft. mark, then place the nozzle in square on pavement. They will then walk 30 feet to the next event to complete this task.
Note: It is O.K. to run during the hose pull.
5. Victim Rescue
The candidate will drag or carry a 175 lb. victim (rescue dummy) a distance of 100 ft. This event and the Fire Fighter Physical Agility Test are complete when both the victim and the candidate completely clear the finish line.
Time is continuous from start to finish and the test must be completed in a time of 7 minutes.
Psychological Fitness Evaluation: Candidate must pass a psychological fitness evaluation given by a professional chosen by the City of Sandusky showing that the applicant meets psychological requirements necessary to perform the duties of a firefighter.
Physical Examination: Candidate must pass physical examination showing applicant is free from cardiovascular and pulmonary diseases and able to meet the physical requirements to perform duties of a firefighter.
Felony, Criminal Activity Disqualifiers: No person shall be eligible for appointment who has been convicted of felony, theft, or any other crime that may, in the view of the Civil Service Commission, compromise public trust. All applicants must pass a background check to make this determination.
Veterans’ Preference: All applicants for original appointment who are veterans of military service, and a resident of Ohio, as described in ORC 124.23, may file with the Commission a certificate of military service or honorable discharge whereupon he shall receive additional credit of twenty percent (20%) of his total grade given in the regular examination, provided that he has received a passing grade.Such requests for veteran’s credit must be submitted to the Commission along with the application for examination and must, at that time, be accompanied by proof of military service as described above. Veteran’s credit request after the final date for test application will not be honored.Applicants eligible for veteran’s credit on original appointment examination shall receive a priority in ranking over non-veterans who obtain an identical grade.
Credits: A person who prior to the date of the examination has a current Firefighter I & II and Ohio EMT basic level certification shall receive additional credit of ten percent (10%) of his/her total grade given in the regular examination, provided that he/she receives a passing grade.
A person who prior to the date of the examination has a current Ohio Emergency Medical Technician (“EMT”)-Paramedic certification shall receive additional credit of ten percent (10%) of his/her total grade given in the regular examination, provided that he/she receives a passing grade.
Such requests for training credit must be submitted to the Commission clerk and must, at that time, be accompanied by proof of current certification.
If a person receives training and achieves an Ohio Firefighter I & II and Ohio EMT basic level certification after taking the examination, he/she will get the additional credit of ten percent (10%) of his/her/her total grade given in the regular examination. Such a request requires the applicant to submit the training credit to the Commission clerk once receiving proof of certification. Training credit will be honored if received after the date of the examination if the applicant still has a unexpired/current score.
If a person receives training and achieves Ohio Emergency Medical Technician (“EMT”) – paramedic certification after taking the examination, he/she will get the additional credit of ten percent (10%) of his/her/her total grade given in the regular examination. Such a request requires the applicant to submit the training credit to the Commission clerk once receiving proof of certification. Training credit will be honored if received after the date of the examination if the applicant still has a unexpired/current score.
Applicants for original appointment shall be entitled to only such credit as is set forth above (relating to original appointment credit). The maximum accumulative credit that any one applicant may receive on an original appointment examination shall not exceed twenty percent (20%).In scoring all original and promotional examinations, no additional credit shall be given to any applicant, unless such applicant has achieved the minimum passing grade without the addition of any additional credit.
