Job Classification: Entry-Level Firefighter

The Fayetteville Fire Department is building an annual list for Entry-Level Firefighter. Candidates must complete the CPAT licensed by the IAFF and the FireTEAM test through National Testing Network by June 2, 2025, at 4:30 pm CDT.

Salary Information: Starting Salary $46,126 – Firefighter Pay Range $46,126 - $63,831

Department Overview:

The Fayetteville Fire Department is a progressive, all hazards emergency services response agency that includes fire suppression, emergency medical services, every kind of rescue, code enforcement, arson investigation, and public education. These services are provided by 134 members from 9 fire stations with state-of-the-art fire trucks, rescue, and medical equipment. The Fire Department responded to 13,156 calls for service during 2023. The department responds to medical calls inside the city with basic life support, non-transport fire companies. Our Firefighters are committed to delivering the finest customer service possible.

Job Requirements

Age : 18-35 years of age ( see Min. Qualifications section 2)

Citizenship Required : Yes, or be a nonimmigrant legally admitted to the United States under the Compact of Free Association (Marshall Islands)

High School Grad/GED : Yes

Valid ARKANSAS Driver's License : Yes, must possess a valid driver's license from any state.

Ability to Read/Speak English : Yes

Minimum Qualifications :

Be a citizen of the United States or a nonimmigrant legally admitted to the United States under the Compact of Free Association (Marshall Islands), not less than 18 years of age. Applicants less than 21 years of age must possess one of the requirements listed in a - e:

a. Arkansas EMT certification or National Registry EMT certification

b. Medical certification or license at a higher level (paramedic, nurse, etc.)

c. 12 college credit hours

d. Firefighter I and Firefighter II certification through IFSAC or Pro-Board

e. A minimum of two years’ honorable service in the US Armed Forces including National Guard.

Ark. State Code provides that no person who has arrived at the age of thirty-five (35) shall be eligible for appointment to the Fire Department except where the applicant is already a paid firefighter. The maximum age of thirty-five (35) shall not apply to:

a. Any person who has at least two (2) years of previous experience as a paid firefighter with another department and whose years of experience as a paid firefighter, when subtracted from the person’s age leaves a remainder of not more than thirty- two (32) years.

b. A current or former service member of the regular or reserve component of the uniformed services of the United States as defined under 10 U.S.C. § 101 who is within three (3) years of separation or retirement from the regular or reserve component of the uniformed services of the United States.

Must possess a high school diploma or GED. A transcript from an accredited institution documenting a minimum of twelve (12) hours of completed college coursework with at least a “C” average may substitute for a high school diploma or GED certificate.
Must possess a valid driver’s license.
Must successfully pass post offer testing including criminal background check, drug screen, physical examination and psychological evaluation.
If not already certified, must obtain Firefighter I, Firefighter II and EMT certification within twelve (12) months of hire.
If not already certified, must obtain EMT certification within eighteen (18) months of hire.
Must possess the ability to communicate effectively both orally and written often under adverse conditions; possess good judgment; good powers of observation and memory.
Ability to react quickly and effectively in all emergencies, natural or man-caused disasters.
Ability to effectively present information and respond to questions from the general public.
Must be proficient in the operation and use of all vehicles and equipment.
Must have ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with management and staff.
While performing the functions of this job, the employee is regularly required to talk and hear. The employee is regularly required to stand, walk, and sit; use hands to finger, handle, or feel; reach with hands and arms; climb or balance; stoop, kneel, crouch, or crawl. The employee must regularly lift and/or move up to 100 pounds. Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, distance vision, color vision, peripheral vision, depth perception, and ability to adjust focus.
While performing the functions of this job, the employee is exposed to extremes in weather conditions; possible injury while riding on emergency vehicles or operating department equipment; hazards inherent to fire, hazardous materials, special rescue scene situations and emergency medical incidents. The noise level in the working environment is frequently loud. Mental stress generated by involvement in life and death situations; cardiovascular stress generated by movement from resting to highly active states.

Post Hiring Certifications : Must certify as Firefighter I & II (IFSAC) within 12 months of hire and EMT within 18 months hire (training provided).

Schooling Prior and Post Hiring Training : Training will be provided for Firefighter and EMT certifications.

Specific Disqualifiers/Behaviors : Felony, Criminal Activity Disqualifiers: Felony Conviction.

Driving Disqualifiers: Lack of a valid Driver’s License.

Employment Disqualifiers: After receiving a conditional offer of employment, Candidates are required to complete post-offer medical screenings, a background investigation and climb a 75’ ft aerial ladder.
