BASE RATE

After one (1) year – 80% of base rate $20.97 $21.60 $22.25

After two (2) years - 85% of base rate $22.28 $22.95 $23.64

After four (3) years - 100% of base rate $26.21 $27.00 $27.81

We are also accepting lateral transfers with prior full-time Corrections Officer experience at the Sheriff’s discretion to match years of service in the contract.

Department Overview: The Sheriff’s Office consists of three divisions: the Patrol Division, comprised of Patrol Deputy Sheriff’s, Detectives, and Communications Officers. The Jail Division; and the Civil Division.

Area Information: Erie County covers 626 square miles. Erie County is conveniently located less than one hour from Cleveland and Toledo and within hours from Columbus, Detroit, Dayton, Pittsburgh, Cincinnati, Buffalo, Indianapolis, Chicago, and Toronto. JOB RESPONSIBILITIES:
Under general supervision, the Corrections Officer observes, secures, supervises, and ensures the general welfare of incarcerated adults in the county jail and performs other duties specifically assigned by the Sheriff and/or designee.

WORKING CONDITIONS:
The Corrections Officer is expected to work irregular hours, expanded and rotating shifts for twenty-four (24) hour coverage.

ILLUSTRATIVE DUTIES:
Security Operations:
*Operate and control all electronic door panels.
*Monitor inmates in adjacent housing units.
*Observe inmates in special units.
*Observe inmate movement.
*Search inmates and their belongings, as needed.
Notify Corporals and/or Shift Supervisor of problems.
*Call for back-up assistance, as necessary.
*Inform replacement shift of ongoing issues.
*Perform bed checks, check locks and inspect facility for security infringements and violations.

Intake and Release:
*Conduct computer inquiry for outstanding wants/warrants.
*Conduct intake procedures:

Interview inmates and complete medical and other intake information.
Contact medical staff, if necessary.
Inventory inmate property.
Accept and document contraband into evidence, if necessary.
Prepare fingerprint cards and fingerprint inmates.
Photograph inmates.
Supervise inmate search/shower procedure.
Secure property in property room.
Obtain jail clothing and provide to inmates.
Issue personal items.
Provide orientation while escorting inmate to housing units.

*Conduct release procedures.

Review and select appropriate release files.
Prepare inmates for release.
Obtain inventory record; property from property room.
Escort inmate or arrange for escort.
Exchange inmates jail clothing for personal clothing and belongings.
Release, escort and observe inmate departure from jail.

Jail Operations and Inmate Supervision:
Supervise the inmate housing units, recreation and activities and inmate/visitor interactions.
*Supervise inmates assigned to maintenance and grounds upkeep.
*Inspect the jail facility including individual units and dayrooms
Administer corrective action, as necessary.
*Obtain program listing and staff briefings and review program schedule.
*Schedule inmates’ attendance and arrange escort.
*Distribute and collect commissary and library request forms from inmates.
Deliver commissary order box to inmates.
Collect books, as necessary.
*Maintain a log of all incoming and outgoing mail.
Collect and distribute mail.

Inmate Escort:
*Escort inmates and visitors to and from visitation.
*Escort inmates to and from medical center.
*Provide security during medical treatment/exams.
*Escort inmates to and from program services.

Miscellaneous:
Prepare and maintain records and reports.
Attend meetings and serve on temporary committees, as requested.
*Maintain and increase knowledge and skills through attendance at meetings, conferences, training seminars and in-service training sessions.
Perform additional duties and assignments as required.
