Job Classification: Firefighter/ Paramedic
Hood River Fire & EMS is hiring for two (2) Firefighter/Paramedic, with an anticipated start date of April 14, 2026 and is also establishing an eligibility list for future vacancies. First Review March 27, 2026.

This position requires a FireTEAM written examination and a Candidate Physical Ability Test (CPAT) that is valid within the last 6 months. After the application process closes, Hood River Fire & EMS will contact candidates on the eligibility list and invite them to participate in the following stages of the department selection process.
Testing Requirements
· FireTEAM Written Examination (NTN)
· Candidate Physical Ability Test (CPAT)
o CPAT must be valid within the last six (6) months
All required testing must be completed no later than 11:50 PM on Friday, March 27, 2026, to be considered for the current vacancy.
Following the close of the application period, candidates on the eligibility list will be contacted and invited to participate in additional phases of the department’s selection process.
Salary
Hourly : $31.64 - $35.61 (includes 9% paramedic premium)
Monthly: $7,700 (entry-Step 1) - $8,666 (Step 5)
FLSA: Non-Exempt

City and Department Overview:
Hood River is a vibrant community of approximately 9,000 residents and serves as the county seat of Hood River County. Located just 60 miles east of Portland along the Columbia River Gorge, Hood River is internationally known for outdoor recreation, including windsurfing, kiteboarding, mountain biking, and hiking. Mt. Hood—offering world-class skiing and snowboarding—is only 30 minutes away. The city also features excellent schools and a thriving downtown with a strong arts and cultural presence.
Established in 1904, Hood River Fire & EMS is a full-service fire and emergency medical services provider, including ambulance transport. The department serves an Ambulance Service Area of approximately 145 square miles, covering portions of Hood River and Wasco counties. In 2025, the department responded to over 2,000 incidents from a single fire station. Personnel work a 48/96 A-B-C shift schedule.
Minimum Qualifications
Age: 18 years or older
Citizenship Required: US citizenship is not required. Candidates will be required to show proof of their ability to work in the U.S.
Education: High school diploma or GED required
Language: Ability to read, write and speak English
College: Not required (post-secondary education preferred)Certifications & Experience
· Oregon Paramedic certification required by start date
o National Registry or out-of-state paramedics must obtain Oregon Paramedic certification through reciprocity prior to appointment
o Provisional Oregon Paramedic certification does not meet minimum qualifications
· ACLS and PALS (American Heart Association) required prior to start date
· NFPA Firefighter I (or equivalent) required upon appointment
· No prior fire service experience accepted
Background & Medical Requirements
o All non-expunged criminal convictions must be disclosed and will be evaluated based on severity, frequency, and relevance
o Candidates must meet certification standards of the Oregon Department of Public Safety Standards and Training (DPSST) and the Oregon Health Authority
o Must possess a valid driver’s license recognized by the State of Oregon and maintain a driving record insurable by the City
o Must meet NFPA 1582 medical and fitness standards
o Successful completion of a pre-employment NFPA 1582 physical examination and drug screening is required
